Wolves transfer news: Club to keep trying to tie Ruben Neves down to new contract

Wolves will reportedly keeping plugging away to sign Ruben Neves to a new contract, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

At the moment, the maestro has a deal that expires in the summer of 2024.

Many feel as though they are watching Neves’ final few months play out. It was expected that Neves was going to leave last summer.

In the end though, he stayed with Wolves seemingly not receiving any appropriate offers.

It was reported the club slapped a £70 million asking price on the Portugal international.

While many fans believe Neves will finally go this summer, it is being suggested that Wolves are not giving up hope of extending his contract.

According to Dharmesh Sheth, Wolves will still be trying to come to an agreement with the 26-year-old.

He told Give Me Sport: “A move for Neves has always been talked about.

“He’s been around for a while as well and it’s hard to believe that he’s only 26 years old, just about approaching his peak.

“Neves is the captain, so unsurprisingly Wolves do not want to let him go. They would love to tie him down to a new contract, but I think he’ll be assessing his options in the summer.”

Wolves hopes of tying Ruben Neves down to a new contract might be in vain

It would be a hugely pleasant surprise if Wolves were able to get Neves to extend his contract.

He has been at the club since the summer of 2017 and has been a wonderful servant. Many would not begrudge him a move this summer with one year left on his deal.

Of course Wolves will do everything they can to get him to extend.

But that just doesn’t feel very likely, especially with the club’s Premier League status currently under threat.

Had Wolves been in the top half of the table at this point, there might have been more of a chance.

But he is surely going to see what happens before making any kind of commitment.

Neves is easily good enough to be playing for a Champions League club, so it would be a huge thing if Wolves actually did get him tied down.
