Wolverhampton Wanderers are being linked with a late move for Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car.

According to Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas, the club have an interest in the Croatia international, but face an uphill task to convince him to join.

Following their fifth-placed finish last season, Marseille are in the Europa League this season.

So convincing a player to leave a club that is in a European competition might be tricky.

Caleta-Car has been with Marseille since 2018, joining the Ligue 1 outfit from RB Salzburg.

He has racked up 91 appearances so far for them, and played 130 times for Salzburg.

Caleta-Car has also earned 16 caps with the Croatia national team, and featured at Euro 2020, including against England.

Marseille are said to need to sell some players to alleviate some of the financial pressure brought about by the pandemic.

Apparently, they would be willing to sell for a fee of £17 million.

Caleta-Car would be a solid addition

Caleta-Car would make for a good signing.

The player has been linked with other English clubs in recent times such as West Ham and Liverpool. He did actually confirm he had an offer to join the Reds in January (via GFFN).

Clearly then, he has something about him, and the amount of games he has played so far despite still only being 24 is a further indicator of his ability.

Standing at an imposing 6ft 4in tall, Caleta-Car would surely be very handy for Wolves on defending set-pieces.

He’s also a decent distributor from the back, with WhoScored recording his pass completion rate in the league at 86% last season.

It remains to be seen if the player fancies a new challenge.
