PSG manager Christophe Galtier has said that Mauro Icardi is free to leave the club this summer, after the striker was recently linked with a shock move to Wolves.
Icardi is way down the pecking order at the Parc des Princes.
The former Inter Milan captain is competing with the likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, Pablo Sarabia, Julian Draxler, and new signing Hugo Ekitike for minutes.
Icardi was not involved for PSG in their 5-0 win over Clermont Foot last weekend.
And it would seem an exit could soon be on the cards for the 29-year-old, who cost PSG £54 million in 2020 (BBC Sport).
Galtier is quoted as saying (RMC Sport, translated by GFFN): “I saw Mauro at the start of the week. His absence last week was for tactical reasons, I told him that I want to reduce the size of the squad and not work with 25 outfield players.
“The club is working closely with Mauro to find the best possible solution.”
“He’s had very little game time and I think it would be best for him to get back up and running. He hasn’t suddenly lost everything [he can do] but it’s true that it’s been complicated for the last two years. Being able to change location, to find a more favourable environment, can help you get back on track in your career.”
Icardi was linked with a shock move to Molineux last month.
Corriere dello Sport claimed that PSG had asked for the help of Jorge Mendes to facilitate a move away for Icardi.
With Mendes having close links with Wolves, PSG were hoping to try and offload Icardi to Molineux.
At the moment, it is thought that Wolves are trying to bring in another centre-forward.
The club signed Goncalo Guedes on Monday, but the 25-year-old is not an out-and-out number nine.
He can play through the middle, but his primary position is a winger.
Galtier says Mauro Icardi is free to leave PSG – could Wolves make a shock move in the coming weeks?
It would be some story.
Icardi likely won’t be short of suitors this summer now that Galtier has declared he can go.
Even though he hasn’t lived up to his billing at the Parc des Princes, he’s still scored 38 goals in 92 games, and provided 10 assists.
Icardi is the very definition of an out-and-out centre-forward.
He is very dangerous in the penalty area and you won’t really catch him drifting out wide and running the channels like a Guedes would.
The transfer window can always throw up a major surprise. For many, it was a real shock to see Coady join Everton on loan.
Icardi could be expensive, especially on wages.
But maybe Wanderers should look into a potential deal with the help of Mendes. He might just fancy a crack at the Premier League.
