Chelsea are reportedly keeping tabs on Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes.
According to journalist and Chelsea writer Simon Phillips, the Blues are seeking to bolster their midfield.
Over the past few weeks, they have been trying to sign Enzo Fernandez from Benfica.
At one point the deal looked fairly close to completion. But Benfica have been angered by Chelsea’s proposed staggered payment method.
The Portuguese giants, quite simply, want Fernandez’s release clause paid up front and in full.
It remains to be seen if that’s what they’ll end up doing.
But Phillips says Wolves star Nunes is someone they’re also looking at.
Nunes has started to really show his quality for Wolves in recent weeks.
The 24-year-old was not being used correctly by Bruno Lage and Steve Davis. But Julen Lopetegui has deployed him a bit deeper, and he definitely looks much more comfortable in that role.
Last week, reports suggested that Liverpool are keen to sign Nunes for around £44 million. The claim was that a deal would be more likely to happen this summer.
Now, Chelsea are said to be monitoring.
Lopetegui recently played down transfer talk about Nunes, insisting that the player was happy at Molineux.
Matheus Nunes won’t leave Wolves this month, but summer interest will be plentiful
There is surely no way Nunes leaves Wolves this month.
He recently accepted that he hasn’t quite been at it since joining from Sporting CP for an initial £38 million, and was defiant about turning things around in 2023.
Seemingly he’s ready to start showing how good he really is this year. And judging by his first couple of displays, there’s a good chance that will happen.
Lopetegui is using him properly now. And Nunes will no doubt want to play regularly in that deeper role.
