Wolves transfer news: AS Roma eye Molineux maestro Joao Moutinho

AS Roma reportedly want to sign Joao Moutinho this summer.

According to a report from Jornal de Noticias, the Serie A outfit are looking to prise the 35-year-old away from Molineux.

Currently, Moutinho and Wolves are locked in talks over a new deal.

The club want to keep the veteran, and the player himself is said to want to extend his stay.

However, journalist Tim Spiers recently stated that the sticking point is about the length of the contract.

Moutinho wants two years, and Wolves only want to offer one.

It remains to be seen if an agreement can be reached, and most fans would hope he doesn’t depart this summer.

Wolves are already losing two dressing room leaders in the form of John Ruddy and Romain Saiss.

Ruddy said on Instagram that he would be leaving, and Saiss has also strongly suggested he’s moving on when his contract expires.

Moutinho signing for Roma – who’ll play in next season’s Europa League – would see him follow his former teammate Rui Patricio to the Stadio Olimpico.

Wolves sold them the Portugal number one last summer for a fee just shy of £10 million.

Wolves have to reach an agreement with Joao Moutinho, with Roma waiting in the wings

Roma’s interest in Moutinho is a little concerning.

Obviously Patricio made the move there last summer, and they are managed by Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese influence may well appeal to Moutinho.

It would be a big blow if Wolves were unable to reach an agreement with the £100,000-a-week star.

He had a good season in 2021/22 and his performances generally did suggest he has another campaign in him.

It’s so important for Wolves to have leaders and top professionals. Moutinho is both of those things, and still a class player to boot.
