Wolves transfer boost as £10m target tells club he ‘wants to leave’ before transfer window shuts

Wolves could be braced for a busy week in the transfer window as deadline day fast approaches.

Gary O’Neil is aware of the task in hand at Wolves following a dreary start to the 2024/25 campaign.

From their opening two games, the Old Gold have conceded eight goals, picking up no points and subsequently sit 19th in the table.

Fortunately, there is still time left in the transfer window for O’Neil to make the necessary changes to his squad, with one target’s future now made clear.

Wolves target Sam Johnstone tells Crystal Palace he wants to leave

One area Wolves have been linked to strengthening in the window is the club’s options between the sticks.

Several goalkeepers are rumoured to be on Matt Hobbs’ radar, including English duo Aaron Ramsdale and Sam Johnstone.

While both ‘keepers are available to be signed this summer, Wolves could have just been handed an even greater shot at signing Johnstone.

Journalist Edmund Brack reported that Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has confirmed that the Wolves target wants to leave Selhurst Park this summer.

Glasner admitted he didn’t want to keep the Englishman’s stance a secret, telling the media, “Sam told us he wants to leave. If he finds a club, he can leave.”

Johnstone will cost Wolves £10m if the Old Gold are to sign him before deadline day, as was confirmed earlier in the summer.

Gary O’Neil must target Johnstone after Jose Sa blunder

While Johnstone may not be considered an upgrade on Jose Sa, what is for sure is that the Portugal international desperately needs some competition at Molineux.

On Sunday, the 31-year-old had a calamitous afternoon against Chelsea, where he was at fault for several goals, being beaten at his near post and being caught wildly out of positon.

Signing Johnstone would only increase Sa’s need to improve in O’Neil’s squad, with current options Tom King and Dan Bentley being below the level required to be Wolves’ number one.

Now that Johnstone’s transfer wish has been confirmed by his club, it will be interesting to see if Wolves push harder to sign the 31-year-old before the end of the week.
