Wolves told they should have signed Bournemouth midfielder who would start ‘week in, week out’

Wolves failed to find their midfield signing this summer, and the middle of the park is lacking depth.

The transfer window disappointed towards the end, with many fans feeling as though Wolves were one or two signings short of a job well done.

There was plenty of change around Wolves with players, but also key staff, leaving at the start of summer. Sporting Director Matt Hobbs left after ten years at the club.

Hobbs had been working on a move for a starting-quality Bournemouth midfielder, and journalist Liam Keen thinks Domenico Teti should have continued where he left off.

Liam Keen says Wolves should have signed ‘quality’ midfielder David Brooks from Bournemouth

David Brooks was an important piece in Andoni Iraola’s midfield last campaign, making 29 appearances for Bournemouth, often as an impact player off the bench.

But Keen sees Brooks as a quality attack-minded midfielder who could start for Wolves.

On the E&S Wolves podcast, he says: “And we talked about players the Wolves had lined up to potentially bring in and they didn’t do. This one’s not new. This is public knowledge.

“David Brooks at Bournemouth was a player the Wolves looked at. He would have been cheap. Bournemouth were prepared to sell and he’s starting for Bournemouth in the Premier League. He’d start for Wolves.”

Brooks was seen as a real option by Hobbs during his tenure, but it seems he fell off the radar when the restructure occurred.

A player like David Brooks would give signings time to get used to the Premier League

None of Wolves’ new signings have played in the Premier League before, and they need time to get used to the intensity.

“He’s a player that alongside the players that are going to need a bit of time to get ready, a bit of time to get used to the Premier League, is a player that could play every week, week in, week out, be industrious, be hard working, have a bit of quality at the end of his foot as well.”

There was no signing of this nature, and we are seeing the consequences as the attacking signings haven’t slotted into the side as hoped. No goals from new signings Jhon Arias and Fer Lopez this season.

But they have to adapt.

Wolves don’t have the luxury of giving things time. They have an important few weeks ahead in which results are desperately needed.

Brooks would have offered cover for the two wide attackers and the midfield, and he would have been far cheaper than some of the figures floated for other midfielders on Wolves’ radar. A missed opportunity, perhaps.
