Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres is now a ‘long shot’ for Wolves with the Premier League linked striker closing in on a big-money move to Sporting Lisbon.
After the Sweden international scored one and set up the other during Coventry’s 2-1 victory over Sunderland in February, Black Cats boss Tony Mowbray drew comparisons between Viktor Gyokeres and another Scandinavian centre-forward.
“He looks a yard more powerful and a yard quicker than everyone else. He’s a really confident boy,” Mowbray told the Northern Echo.

“Gyokeres looks a yard faster and stronger than the players he plays against in the Championship. The way he buys himself space to shoot is pretty impressive. Coventry did well to hold onto him, he looks a really talented boy.
“Who is like him in the Premier League at the moment? Who is too fast, too strong and too big? You would suggest (Erling) Haaland is like that.”
With the Daily Mail reporting that Gyokeres is now closing in on a move to Sporting Lisbon, however, it appears as if we will be denied the chance to see the former Swansea City youngster test himself against arguably the world’s greatest centre-forward in England’s top flight.
Sporting Lisbon close in on Viktor Gyokeres deal
In addition to Brentford and Everton, Wolves were keen on offering Gyokeres a chance in the Premier League after Coventry suffered play-off final heartbreak against Luton Town.

Gyokeres, The Athletic says, has been scouted frequently by Wolves. The chance of Gyokres ending up at Molineux, however, feels like a ‘long shot’; Sporting offering European football and Coventry demanding in excess of £20 million.
After spending heavily in previous windows, Wolves are keeping their chequebook closed this time around. Financial Fair Play concerns mean the days of mega-money signings are over for the time being, the likes of Gyokeres, Alex Scott and Almeria’s El Bilal Toure likely to be too expensive.
