Reported Wolves target and World Cup winner Marcos Acuna has been named in L’Equipe’s Team of the Tournament.
The French publication have produced their best XI this morning, after seeing France lose in yesterday’s thrilling final.
It was the Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe show at the Lusail Stadium. While Mbappe hit a hat-trick, it was Messi’s night as Argentina edged their opponents in penalties.
The match capped off what has been a very entertaining month on the football front.
The World Cup served up some great matches, and a number of players have seen their stock soar after shining on the world stage.
One such player is Acuna, who is thought to be someone appreciated by Julen Lopetegui heading into January.
Lopetegui obviously knows him well from their time together at Sevilla.
Acuna gave a great account of himself in Qatar.
He was used in rotation with Nicolas Tagliafico, but made his minutes count when he was on the pitch.
He reportedly wasn’t quite fit enough to start the final yesterday, but he did replace Angel Di Maria on 64 minutes.
Throughout the tournament, Acuna showcased his attack-minded nature and physicality.
It was thought that Sevilla were holding out for at least £10 million to sell him in January. But following his exploits at the World Cup, the Spanish club may well hike their asking price.
Former Wolves defender Romain Saiss also made it into the XI. He was sensational at the back for Morocco.
Wolves target Marcos Acuna looked great at the World Cup as star makes L’Equipe’s Team of the Tournament
L’Equipe are one of the highest profile sports publications in the world.
They are also renowned for being extremely harsh with their player ratings.
So for Acuna to have made it into their Team of the Tournament is saying something.
The 31-year-old showed great tenacity and technical quality during his time in Qatar, and looks like he could be a good addition for Wolves in January.
Of course at the moment, Wolves have two very good young left-backs in Rayan Ait-Nouri and Hugo Bueno. So it will be interesting to see if Lopetegui gives his former player a call.
