Wolves submit bid for 20-year-old who is one of Europe’s most exciting prospects

The transfer window may have slammed shut a month ago, but Wolves are looking ahead to the summer and have already submitted a bid for one of Europe’s most exciting prospects.

Wolves are having an excellent season under Gary O’Neil.

After booking their place in the FA Cup quarter-final on Wednesday night while fighting for Europe in the Premier League, excitement continues to circulate Molineux.

The Wanderers have been one of the most impressive teams to watch in the top flight this term as their ability to hurt teams in transition with their pace and power has been a joy to watch.

Such success in attack has been spearheaded by the brilliance of Pedro Neto, who has nine assists this term and attracted a raft of interest in the process.

Neto was originally captured as a 19-year-old from Serie A side Napoli in 2019 and the club are now eyeing up their next Portuguese gem in Braga’s Rodrigo Gomes.

Wolves launch bid for Braga’s Rodrigo Gomes

Wanderers have a recent history of hoovering up some of Portugal’s best young talent having watched the likes of Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota flourish at Molineux.

It is therefore no surprise to see Wolves dip back into that market by submitting a bid for exciting winger Rodrigo Gomes from Braga.

As reported by O Jogo, O’Neil’s side have tabled an offer of €15 million (£12.8 million) in their attempts to lure him to England, although that hasn’t convinced Braga’s president Antonio Salvador to negotiate as they value the 20-year-old at a much higher fee.

Gomes reportedly has a contract that expires in June 2026 and a release clause of €45 million (£38 million), which makes the aforementioned bid look minuscule.

The Portuguese under-21 international is currently enjoying a productive loan spell at Liga Portugal side Estoril where he has scored four goals and supplied six assists in 20 appearances.

One of Europe’s most exciting talents

Portugal has been a constant talent factory for decades and the current generation has some very exciting players such as Antonio Silva, Joao Neves and Tiago Tomas.

After a successful breakout season at Estoril, Gomes has added his name to that list with the 2003-born winger showcasing his quality as the latest star in the making.

Hailed as one of the most exciting prospects Portugal has to offer by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, the Braga youngster is on the right path to becoming a top player.

A fast and direct winger like Neto, who has also played as a wing-back on several occasions, Gomes has dominated his positional peers across various attacking metrics.

As highlighted by FBref, he ranks in the top 4% for progressive carries in Liga Portugal, the top 3% for assists and the top 8% for non-penalty goals per 90.

Those statistics demonstrate how incredible he is in attacking areas and while the £38 million valuation may put Wolves off, he would be a fine long-term investment.
