Wolves star could be set for Bruno Lage reunion as Benfica eye possible transfer for ‘important’ player

One Wolves star could be the subject of transfer interest from former manager Bruno Lage as he eyes fresh recruits for Benfica.

The transfer window may have shut last week but the future of several stars at Molineux is already being discussed.

Wolves are in talks to terminate Craig Dawson’s contract, with Vitor Pereira leaving him out of his Premier League squad alongside Sasa Kalajdzic.

Although Matheus Cunha signed a new contract, the Brazilian talisman will no doubt have several clubs eyeing his signature in the summer after a £62.5 million release clause was inserted in Cunha’s contract.

Pereira could also see several players depart on a free transfer, with Pablo Sarabia likely to leave Wolves alongside right-back Nelson Semedo.

Nelson Semedo linked with Benfica transfer in reunion with Bruno Lage

Semedo sees his contract expire in June 2025, and there have been suggestions the Portuguese international won’t sign fresh terms.

One of those has come from expert Liam Keen, who claims Semedo could leave Wolves this summer after almost five years at the club.

The 31-year-old was only named as captain in December but his high wages and age mean it could be difficult to hold onto him.

Now, it has emerged that former Wolves manager Bruno Lage, who worked with the ex-Barcelona man at Molineux, could poach the right-back on a free transfer.

According to SIC commentator Luis Aguilar, there is a ‘possibility’ Semedo will return to his former club Benfica in the summer market, with Lage reportedly in the market for a new right-back.

Semedo was the ninth most-used player during Lage’s 15-month stint at Wolves from July 2021 to October 2022, and he was always complimentary of him.

What Bruno Lage said about Nelson Semedo

During the 2021/22 campaign, Semedo suffered an injury in March 2022, and it meant he faced at least a month on the sidelines.

The ex-Benfica star was an integral player under Lage at this point and he praised the Portugal international, outlining his improvement.

“Nelson is going to be out for at least one month. Let’s see how he goes, but we have that news for now – one month out,” Lage said via Birmingham Live.

“We saw two Nelsons this season, the first Nelson was inconsistent, but the second Nelson, in the last three months, was the player I remember from Benfica.

“He is an important player, he’s scored goals and got assists, and defensively he has improved a lot.”

Considering how highly he’s rated by the manager, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Semedo return to his home country and link back up with Lage this summer.
