Wolves’ stance over ‘super’ 23-year-old who is attracting ‘serious attention’

Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes is said to be attracting ‘serious attention’ already, having enjoyed a tremendous first full season at Molineux.

Gomes has been a regular since the start of the campaign, replacing the departed Ruben Neves alongside Mario Lemina and also assuming the Portuguese star’s old shirt number.

Gomes has wowed supporters with his tenacity and energy, and Gary O’Neil has clearly been very taken by him, handing him 27 appearances for a total of 1938 minutes.

He and Lemina have helped totally transform Wolves.

Their dynamism makes them a nightmare to play against, and young Gomes has now put himself in the shop window…

It has been reported this afternoon by The Telegraph that Gomes’ performances this season have not gone unnoticed.

The Brazilian, who could earn his first cap for Brazil against England later this month, is said to be attracting ‘serious attention’ from other clubs.

This follows Matt Hobbs suggesting that clubs have actually already been in contact about Gomes.

The Telegraph don’t mention anyone in particular, but it has previously been claimed that Tottenham Hotspur like the South American.

That is slightly concerning, but also unsurprising. But Wolves fans will be able to take some heart from the line in the report that says the club don’t expect to sell Gomes this year.

Having said that, it is mentioned that Wanderers have already got to work on identifying replacements for Gomes, in the event that a massive offer comes in for him.

There is currently no mention of how much money it could take for Wolves to sell. Having signed the player for £15 million in January 2023 and given he has a contract until the summer of 2028, Gomes is surely worth around triple that initial outlay by now.

Wolves must not be tempted to sell Joao Gomes this summer

Obviously every player has a price, and Wolves do want to become self-sustaining, but it would be a travesty if the ‘super talent’ Gomes was sold this summer.

The star has become a firm favourite at Molineux and has struck up a wonderful partnership with Lemina in midfield, with the pair having become integral to the way this new Wolves side plays.

He gets about the pitch brilliantly, and his ball-winning ability to incredible – in the eyes of Dave Edwards, he is the best he’s ever seen at Wolves for that.

Wolves should not really be entertaining any offers for Gomes, since there will not be any pressure to sell especially if Pedro Neto is sold, which is the expectation.
