Wolves set sights on technically gifted Ligue 1 star after loaning out Tommy Doyle, but Leeds are keen too

Wolves fans are itching to see some new signings come through the door, after a quiet start to the summer.

Only Fer Lopez has arrived at Molineux so far in the transfer window, and fans are starting to get a little frustrated.

It was recently claimed that ‘the penny had dropped’ at Molineux for Wolves executives regarding spending to take the club to the next level.

But since that claim was around a month ago, there has been very little going on in terms of incomings.

Last week, Wolves allowed Tommy Doyle to depart the club on loan to join Birmingham City.

It was expected that he would leave after he got little game time last season, and now fans are waiting to see if a new midfielder will come in to replace him.

And today, the club have been linked with a player from Ligue 1.

Wolves have one of the best midfield pairings in the Premier League at the moment in Andre and Joao Gomes.

The pair complement each other so well, and they were getting better and better as last season wore on.

Realistically, Wolves aren’t going to be signing anyone this summer to challenge them. It’ll be more about providing for them.

According to Foot Mercato, Wolves are one of a few clubs interested in landing RC Lens midfielder Neil El Aynaoui.

El Aynaoui joined Lens in 2023 from Nancy, and has clocked up 56 appearances for the club so far, scoring nine goals and making six assists.

Foot Mercato say that Lens want to keep the player this summer, but interest in him is strong.

As Roma are actually in contact with Lens over El Aynaoui, but there’s also interest from Sunderland and Leeds United, and from Italy, Juventus and AC Milan are said to be keen.

Neil El Aynaoui style of play

El Aynaoui is a midfielder who can operate either in a box-to-box role, or as a holder.

His game revolves around playmaking, suggesting him as a potentially good player to bring in after letting Doyle go.

Mountakhab said of El Aynaoui in 2024: “He stands out for his technical skills, game vision, and ability to move forward.

“His combativeness and selflessness also make him a valuable asset for the balance of the Lens team.”

Last season, El Aynaoui really started to shine for Lens, with the official Ligue 1 website even running a feature on him about being a rising star.

According to them, El Aynaoui is ‘a dynamic player that can drift between the lines’, and the 23-year-old took more offensive responsibility in 2024/25. Interestingly, he also assumed penalty taking duties, scoring all three he took last term.

Wolves were not awarded a single penalty in 2024/25, but if the club did move for El Aynaoui, it is good to know that the star is handy from 12 yards.
