Wolves reject £12.6m bid for player Gary O’Neil insisted has ‘a big future’

Wolves are reported to have turned down a bid for a player Gary O’Neil thinks could have a really bright future at Molineux.

It is all set to be a frantic finish to the summer transfer window.

Wolves, having started the summer so positively, are running out of time to get deals done.

Just over 48 hours remain in the window, and fans are expectant. After Wolves lost their first two Premier League games, the need for a couple of new faces is clear.

Wolves also need to get some players off the books – and one man who has been loosely linked with an exit is Boubacar Traore.

Now, a new claim has been made about the Mali international.

According to L’Equipe, Wolves have rejected a bid worth around £12.6 million from Feyenoord for midfielder Boubacar Traore.

It has been suggested earlier this week that Traore was the subject of interest from the Dutch giants, who have already taken full-back Hugo Bueno on loan for the season.

Traore was the final player back at Wolves ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, after featuring for his country at the Olympics in Paris.

He has been unable to feature in front of Gary O’Neil, and has seen no involvement so far in the Premier League.

He is the fourth-choice central midfielder at Molineux at the moment, and things may become more difficult for him this season.

If Luke Cundle sticks around then that is even more competition for Traore. And we have seen in pre-season Jean Ricner-Bellegarde feature in a deeper role.

Wolves right to reject

Wolves have done right by rejecting this offer from Feyenoord.

Wolves bought Traore for around £9.5 million after initially signing him on loan in the summer of 2022.

Simply put, Wolves know they have an exciting prospect on their hands in Traore, so to sell for only a few million more than they bought him for would not make sense.

Yes, Traore has struggled for game time at Molineux. But he’s still had some promising outings, and he could very well be the ideal successor to Joao Gomes, who many feel could move on next summer.

O’Neil believes in Traore’s potential. He said earlier this year: “We haven’t got to see quite enough of it (his pressing and energy) this year, so it’s important we keep trying to use him and improve him. He has a big future because he’s still very young.”

If Wolves were thinking of selling Traore, then they could surely get more than £12.6 million. L’Equipe say that Lens and Borussia Monchengladbach are also keen, which means a bidding war could break out.
