Wolves now showing interest in central defender Daniel Podence knows well

Wolves are reportedly now showing interest in a central defender who is well-known to Daniel Podence.

Gary O’Neil looks set to get his first signing over the line very soon, with Rodrigo Gomes having been having his medical today ahead of a £12.7 million transfer.

Gomes will sign from Braga, having really impressed out on loan with Estoril last season.

Wolves fans are hoping that Wanderers will build on Gomes with more new faces, with the goal being to improve on last season’s 14th-placed finish in the Premier League.

It has previously been suggested that Wolves could look to sign a new centre-back this summer.

And now it looks as though the club are targeting one – and he’s someone who has been linked with Wolves before.

Wolves have made ‘exploratory contacts’ over Olympiacos defender David Carmo

According to Record on Tuesday, Wolves have now expressed interest in FC Porto defender David Carmo.

Carmo, 24, has been with the Portuguese giants since 2022, when he signed for them from Braga.

Last season, he went out on loan to Olympiacos, meaning he was playing with Wolves winger Daniel Podence.

Carmo actually started the season with Porto, but joined the Greek giants in the January transfer window and went on to make 20 appearances for them.

Wolves naturally had eyes on Olympiacos anyway due to the fact that Podence was playing for them. But clearly, Carmo has made an impression.

Record say that Wolves have ‘exploratory contacts’ have now been made over Carmo. But they are not the only club keen – newly-promoted Leicester City are also interested.

Currently, it is unclear how much Porto value the player.

But he was signed for €22.5 million all in (£19 million). Given he has a contract until the summer of 2027, it’s hard to see how Wolves would be able to pay less than that initial investment of Porto’s.

Interestingly, this is not the first time Wolves have been linked with Carmo. In the summer of 2022, Bruno Lage reportedly wanted to sign him while he was still at Braga.

Carmo could be a cracking addition

So Wolves are showing interest in the ‘towering’ Carmo and this could be an exciting addition if it comes to fruition.

Portuguese-born Carmo, who is an Angola international, is fearsome from a physical standpoint. He is 6ft 5in, which would make him the tallest player at Wolves.

Last season, he recorded a very respectable percentage of dribbles tackled rate of 80%. For some context, Max Kilman had 75% (via fbref). He is also handy on the ball, coming in with a pass completion rate of 84% (Kilman 86%).

There has been some talk about Yerson Mosquera being brought back into the fold at Wolves after his successful loan spells at FC Cincinnati and Villarreal.

But it may well be that Gary O’Neil wished to get one more in, given the injury problems for Dawson last season and the fact he is approaching his mid-thirties.
