Wolves now move to sign set-piece specialist who Jamie Carragher really likes

Wolves are reportedly interested in signing Aaron Cresswell from West Ham United.

Julen Lopetegui’s side have been quiet so far in the summer window.

But things may well just be about to pick up, after a few outgoings.

Matt Doherty is due for his medical at the club today after a return on a free transfer.

And Nico Elvedi has been strongly linked with a move to Molineux from Borussia Monchengladbach.

And Wolves are now being linked with a third defender.

Cresswell has been at West Ham since 2014 and has a been a really good servant to the club.

But in recent times he has lost prominence, with West Ham actually now seeking to bring in younger left-back.

Wolves are said to be willing to pay around £2.5 million for the 33-year-old.

Wolves, of course, last did business with the Hammers just six months ago when they brought Craig Dawson to Molineux.

It remains to be seen what this could mean for the likes of Hugo Bueno, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Ryan Giles.

You would imagine at least one of those will be leaving if this deal happens.

Cresswell would be a good signing by Wolves – but only if he’d be a back-up

Cresswell would make a good signing by Wolves.

He’s obviously not the same full-back he was a few years ago.

But left-back Cresswell remains a dependable player, and he can also operate on the left of a back three. We have seen Julen Lopetegui go to a back three in games before.

Cresswell also has very good delivery into the box. He’s decent at free-kicks and corners, and someone like Sasa Kalajdzic could really benefit.

He’s made an impressive 37 assists for West Ham since he signed. He’s also scored 10 goals.

He’s a player who has previously impressed Jamie Carragher, who said of the Englishman a couple of years ago: “Well, Aaron Cresswell set to make his 217th Premier League appearance for West Ham. A great signing from Ipswich.

“He has started 46 of their last 47 Premier League games. It just goes to show what a consistent performer he has been for West Ham.”

Furthermore, Cresswell is a leader. He has sported the captain’s armband several times for the Hammers.

If the plan is to have Cresswell as a back-up, then it could be a shrewd move by Wanderers. He should not be a starter, though.
