Wolves must act fast to secure potential Max Kilman replacement for bargain price

Wolves must act quickly if they wish to secure the services of a potential Max Kilman replacement, Nico Elvedi.

Before the summer transfer window began, Wolves needed to strengthen multiple areas. Up top was the most obvious with Gary O’Neil’s side possessing few strikers until Jorgen Strand Larsen signed for the club.

More recently, it has become clear that Wolves need a defender. Since Max Kilman departed to West Ham for £40 million, the club have been left with only three senior centre-backs.

With O’Neil opting to play a back three for most of last season, this poses a big issue going into the new season.

Four defenders are believed to have been shortlisted to replace Kilman, with the time window to sign one of them quickly closing in.

Elvedi has long been linked to Wolves. The defender who currently plays for German side Borussia Mönchengladbach was subject to heavy interest from Wolves last summer.

Now, this seems to have been rekindled again after Kilman’s departure from the club.

It has been suggested that Wolves could go back in for Elvedi who is available for just €10m due to his release clause. However, the window to get the centre-back for so cheap could soon close.

According to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, his release clause is only valid until the end of July. This gives Wolves little time to complete the deal and secure the defender.

It is believed that Wolves’ interest in Elvedi is genuine and talks have taken place. If no one triggers the clause then a deal between O’Neil’s side and Mönchengladbach is believed to still be possible.

For a centre-back of Elvedi’s experience, Wolves are unlikely to find a cheaper deal. The defender would be a great option for the club to have going into the 2024/25 campaign and would really bolster their squad.

The Swiss defender is still only 27 years old and has plenty of experience at international level as well as over 300 appearances for the German club.

Realistically, O’Neil needs to target two centre-backs this summer. If Elvedi comes in alongside another top defender, it would be excellent business for Wolves.

Hopefully, in the coming weeks, the club make a quick decision on whether to sign Elvedi to stop another potential transfer saga dragging out for the Swiss man.
