Wolves’ Joao Gomes is a man in demand as two more Premier League clubs join Man United in race

Joao Gomes is one of Wolves’ best players, and losing him during a crucial relegation battle will be a major blow.

Signs point towards the Brazilian’s time at Molineux coming to an end sooner rather than later, but that question remains about whether it will be in January or the summer.

Reports have indicated Manchester United are close to agreeing a deal for the Wolves man, but internally, the club have told Rob Edwards Joao Gomes is staying.

And the Wolves boss has received no indication to the contrary.

Rob Edwards addresses Joao Gomes transfer rumours

“We’ve spoken about stuff but my focus has been on getting the team organised. We have got some good players and there will always be interest, but I’m not aware of anything. Joao has been excellent this week.”

The player may be tempted to jump ship. It is a World Cup year, and his chances of being selected while playing in a struggling side are slim.

However, there are reasons for Joao Gomes to stay at Wolves beyond January. That temptation to leave could be tested further, as Manchester United are seemingly not the only club who want him.

Joao Gomes looks to have impressed multiple clubs in the Premier League during his time at Wolves, and that has attracted a lot of interest ahead of the next transfer window.

Manchester United have been the most notable link, with Ruben Amorim wanting to improve his midfield options at Old Trafford.

However, according to journalist Ekrem Konur, Manchester United are not the only Premier League side circling around the Brazilian.

Chelsea and Tottenham both hold interest ahead of the January window.

However, the journalist does also reaffirm the previous reports about a deal for the midfielder to leave in January being close.

A deal around £44 million (€50 million) is reportedly advanced with the Red Devils.

It will be a sad day at Wolves when the Brazilian does leave the club. He is a fan favourite at Molineux, and supporters have called for him to be made the Wanderers captain.

However, come January, there may be no reason to blame him for leaving.

You could not blame Joao Gomes for wanting to leave right now

There is a chance that when January comes along, Wolves will already be too far behind the rest of their relegation rivals.

If that is the case, it would make sense for Wolves to cash out early on Joao Gomes.

The midfielder is a Premier League-quality player, and he does deserve to be playing at that level.

The Wolves man does love the club, but if the prospect of staying up becomes moot, he may start to think about his own future.

Brazil are heading to the World Cup, and lining up for Manchester United will put more spotlight on him than it would for a struggling side such as the Old Gold.
