Wolves in six-club chase for Bundesliga defender, but there’s a significant hurdle

Wolves will be having a busy January as club officials attempt to try and rectify a disastrous predicament.

Wolves have just two points on the board so far this season, and are currently 16 points adrift of safety.

Relegation is looking likely, and this is going to make the January transfer window somewhat complicated.

Wolves do want to strengthen, and go after Premier League-proven players, and also players who are looking for game time ahead of the World Cup.

But at the same time, there may only be so much they can do in terms of attracting top players, with Championship football looking like a distinct possibility next year.

But work is being done on targets – and Wolves have eyes on a defender playing in the Bundesliga.

Wolves are said to be looking to strengthen six positions in the January window.

The club want a new goalkeeper, right wing-back, midfielder, winger, number 10 and a striker.

But it has been claimed today by Quotidiano Sportivo that Wolves are interested in Union Berlin centre-back Diogo Leite.

Leite’s contract with the German outfit expires at the end of the season, meaning there is a strong chance he’ll be moving on next month in a cut-price deal.

Bologna are looking to sign the Portuguese defender. But it’s stated they may face competition from Wolves, Girona, Fiorentina, AC Milan and Fenerbahce.

But the report suggests Leite may not be so keen to join Wolves, and has hopes of joining a club with a higher position.

Potentially, this could be an issue Wolves encounter multiple times during the transfer window, and Matt Jackson and the team will have their work cut out.

There are far more pressing positions for Wolves in January

Leite – who has been linked with Wolves earlier in the season – is perhaps a player who is on the club’s radar given his contract situation and the potential for him to be signed fairly cheap.

But it seems he may not be keen due to Wolves’ predicament – and actually Wolves could do with focusing on other positions.

Wolves are well stocked at centre-back, with the bigger concerns being that Rob Edwards needs creativity and ruthlessness.

A new playmaker and a new forward with a bit of pace and ball carrying ability should be the top priorities.
