Wolves have ‘pressed pause’ on deal to sign to £30m striker

Wolves were reportedly looking to sign Armando Broja from Chelsea, but have now ‘pressed pause’ on the proposed deal.

Gary O’Neil has been wanting to bring in a new centre-forward this month, even before allowing Sasa Kalajdzic and Fabio Silva to leave on loan.

O’Neil wanted a more natural fit to lead the line, to allow him to get Matheus Cunha into more of a free role.

But at his press conference on Thursday, O’Neil cast doubt on Wolves adding the new striker he covets, saying the club were working on two deals but that they are no longer doable.

This evening, a new claim has been made about one of the club’s striker targets…

It has been claimed by Daily Mail journalist Tom Collomosse that Wolves had been in talks with Chelsea about a possible deal for striker Armando Broja this month.

He is a player who has become linked with Wanderers over the last week or so, with the Albania international struggling for minutes at Stamford Bridge.

Fabrizio Romano suggested a few days ago that he was a player to watch out for, with Wolves holding an interest.

But it now looks as though this deal will not be happening. Collomosse wrote on X: “Wolves press pause on move for Armando Broja as they seek to stay within PL spending regulations. Deal discussed: loan with obligation of c.£30m.”

Wolves right to shelve interest

If there is any danger whatsoever of Wolves falling foul of Profitabilty and Sustainability rules, then the club are right not to proceed.

We have already seen Everton get docked 10 points this term, with the Toffees being hit with more charges recently, as well as Nottingham Forest.

Ultimately, while it would be nice to see Wanderers land a new striker to ease the burden on Matheus Cunha, the club are in a good position right now.

It makes more sense to wait until the summer, when a new FFP cycle will have begun and Wolves will be more free to spend. There will also be a lot more options available to sign then.

Perhaps Broja is a player Wolves may look at again in the summer, although a £30 milion valuation does seem very high for a player who’s only ever scored eight goals in 58 Premier League appearances.
