Wolves have missed chance to sign summer target amid Manchester United and Tottenham interest

Wolves did not end the transfer window exactly how they wanted, with a new midfielder not brought into the club.

Josh Brownhill was frequently touted as a cost-effective signing, seeing as he was a free agent. However, the former Burnley man opted for a move to Saudi Arabia.

A sensational move for Barcelona’s Marc Casado was also made during the summer, but the Spaniard wished to stay at the La Liga side

They also chased the signature of Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney, and while that move did not pan out, there is now an update on their chances of signing him later down the line.

Wolves missed their best opportunity to sign Hayden Hackney

Wolves’ chance to sign Hayden Hackney looks to have come and gone.

The Englishman was subject to interest from the Old Gold, but the Championship club remained firm on keeping the player past the summer window.

Molineux News previously reported Middlesbrough’s stance on Hackney could change based on their Championship position in January, as Wolves continued to lurk around the player.

Now, a new report has come out and suggested the Old Gold’s opportunity to land the player may no longer be there.

TeamTALK have said the recent transfer window was “probably the best window of opportunity for a mid-table Premier League side” to sign Hackney.

In the report, Fulham are said to have entered the race as well, but they are also included as part of the clubs that missed their chance.

Manchester United and Tottenham remain admirers of Hackney, and the interest from clubs of that stature makes it all the more difficult for Wolves to move back in for him.

Wolves must sign a midfielder in January

Wolves needed a midfielder in the summer, and that has not changed.

Ladislav Krejci has impressed in the few minutes he has played in the middle of the pitch, but the Czech international seems much better suited to playing in defence.

At the moment, there is very little cover for both Andre and Joao Gomes, with Marshall Munetsi and Jean Ricner-Bellegarde the only other choices besides Krejci.

Vitor Pereira has shown a willingness to adopt a four-at-the-back formation, which often entails three midfielders.

If this is a system that is going to be used more often than not, then the Portuguese will need more names in his squad.

Five midfielders vying for three positions is not ideal squad depth.
