Wolves given transfer warning after ‘very dangerous’ summer business done by Matt Hobbs

Wolves have been warned about one crucial error Matt Hobbs made during the summer transfer window.

It’s been quite the start to the season for the Old Gold, and not necessarily for the right reasons.

Some predicted that Wolves would have a relegation battle this campaign, which were claims that after a strong pre-season, were shot down.

Gary O’Neil’s job has been in doubt due to the Midlands club’s poor start, with mistakes made in the summer proving to be costly.

The summer was rather positive at Molineux, which comes as a surprise given that it took the Wolves squad 11 games to secure their first Premier League win.

A comprehensive pre-season and inspired moves in the transfer window sculpted a strong plan for O’Neil to carry into his second term in the Midlands but, such plot failed.

To discuss Wolves’ decisions in the summer and how it’s impacted the future, Molineux News spoke to journalist Graeme Bailey, who identified a sticky situation Hobbs might have caused.

“I think Wolves set a very dangerous precedent last summer when they let two of the big names go in Max Kilman and Pedro Neto,” Bailey warned.

Wolves offloaded both their club captain and star winger in the summer, prompting the transfer expert to explain how such could cause a domino effect.

“It’s a tough one, I think Rayan Ait-Nouri and Matheus Cunha could go but Joao Gomes has peaked a lot of interest. It’s about who gets the bigger price tag out of the three of them.”

By showing that two key players can leave in one summer, Hobbs might have opened the door to history repeating itself, something that is incredibly unsustainable.

Wolves stars are attracting interest

One of the reasons that Wolves’ relegation form was unexpected is due to the mass of star talent in O’Neil’s squad.

Bailey named three who have generated transfer interest, as 2023 signing Joao Gomes was eyed by Manchester United in the summer.

Gomes is Wolves’ most valuable player in terms of estimated transfer value and has also been one of O’Neil’s shining lights in recent weeks.

Interest doesn’t end with the Brazilian, as Matheus Cunha is admired by several big clubs, which is a similar story for Rayan Ait-Nouri.

Ait-Nouri is wanted by Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford, reinforcing Bailey’s concern over Hobbs lifting the lid on the possibility of several first-team exits in the summer.

One thing is for sure and that is that history cannot repeat itself if Wolves are to push on, with there only so many key talents who can be offloaded before implosion is caused.
