Wolves fans have reacted to the news of Sunderland’s desire to sign goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.
Sunderland’s interest in Johnstone is well documented, with the latest update pointing at a likely loan exit for the 2024 signing.
Matt Hobbs pulled off one of Wolves’ worst transfers by signing the shot-stopper from Crystal Palace last summer, with his arrival unnecessarily disrupting Jose Sa.
Just one year after his transfer, Johnstone is expected to leave Molineux in search of a new challenge, with Vitor Pereira prioritising signing a new goalkeeper.

Wolves fans react to Sam Johnstone to Sunderland transfer
Christos Mandas is one name on Wolves’ transfer radar this summer, with the Lazio shot-stopper a long-term target in the West Midlands.
An exit in this window is essential for Johnstone, just as giving the 32-year-old up is for Wolves, who desperately need to upgrade the position.
When the news broke that Sunderland want to sign Johnstone on loan, Wolves fans made their thoughts known on social media, with the response on X unanimous.
“I’ll drive him there myself,” one Wolves supporter said, a view that was echoed by others.
“Does he need a ride?”
Other supporters joked at the price Wolves should quote Sunderland if the deal were to become permanent.
“For you, £20m,” while another’s humour was more ambitious, “50 million of the king’s finest.”
The talking point then moved onto the idea that Wolves are having a clear-out, following on from the news of Rangers’ interest in Nasser Djiga.
“Cunha, RAN, Dawson, Sarabia, Semedo, Doyle. Forbs gone back and now potentially Djiga and Johnstone. Some serious clearing being done.”
Fans were unanimous in their opinions that selling Johnstone is essential, calling the goalkeeper one of the worst signings ever.
“Might just be the most pointless signing we’ve ever made.”
“Quite comfortably, the worst Wolves signing ever.”
Another supporter then linked the goalkeeper’s move to Jeff Shi’s comment about his worst Wolves signing being Patrick Cutrone, stating that the chairman’s mind should’ve been on Johnstone.
“Can’t believe Jeff said Cutrone was the biggest mistake. At least he bagged a few, cried and had a class chant. This bloke has to be one of the worst signings EVER.”
Johnstone’s Wolves career
Feedback might seem harsh, but it’s fair to say that, for the most part, Johnstone’s time at Wolves has been pretty woeful.
Gary O’Neil made a major mistake by starting Johnstone from matchday three to matchday seven in the Premier League, axing Sa for no clear reason.
| Competition | Appearances | Minutes played | Goals conceded | Clean sheets |
| Premier League | 7 | 630 | 17 | 0 |
| FA Cup | 3 | 300 | 2 | 1 |
| Total | 10 | 930 | 19 | 1 |
The five starts at the beginning of the season represented the longest run the Englishman got in the first team, returning to the fold for a further two games.
Pereira never handed Johnstone a league start, making it clear that his number one was Sa.
The end is now in sight for Johnstone at Wolves, with his pending exit something that has pleased fans.
