Wolves defender Conor Coady admits he’s in limbo at the moment

Conor Coady had admitted he is currently in limbo at the moment, as he prepares to return to Wolves.

The 30-year-old has just finished a loan spell with Everton, and the Toffees have decided not to buy the star.

They could have done so for £4.5 million. And the expectation for a long time was that they would trigger that option.

But Coady’s minutes dried up for Everton following the arrival of Sean Dyche as Frank Lampard’s replacement.

So Coady’s future is now up in the air.

He left Wolves in order to get regular minutes, after there was a change of system at Molineux.

Bruno Lage did away with the back three and wing-backs formation that had long been successful, and brought in a more common back four system.

And Julen Lopetegui has stuck with that system.

Coady will hold talks with Lopetegui now about what the future holds.

Last night, Coady went on BBC Radio 5 live and actually spoke about his current situation. And it’s clear everything is a bit up in the air right now.

He said: “Yeah, a little bit (in limbo). It’s mad, it’s strange, I’ve never kind of had this feeling before. You say in limbo, I’m not in limbo in terms of… I’ve been speaking to Wolves all season. There was a lot of things that went round when I left Wolves at the start of the season. A few people gave me a bit of stick for leaving.

“I’ve spoke to Wolves all season, I love the place. In my eyes, before last pre-season I would have never left Wolves ever in my life. It’s somewhere I hold real close to my heart. I love the place a lot. But we kind of got to a situation last summer where, I think everyone knew the World Cup was coming up.

“I am in a bit of limbo, but I am speaking to Wolves at this moment in time to see what they want. The club’s the most important thing. I’m sure we’ll come to a decision soon.”

Conor Coady clearly still loves Wolves, but him staying does not feel likely

Listening to Coady speak, it is clear he still loves Wolves and would love to play for the club again.

Some don’t want to see him back, given the way he seemingly left. But others would have him back in a heart beat. Like Molineux legend Steve Bull. It is quite a divisive topic.

Lopetegui will make his decision this summer.

But it’s just hard to see him staying because Lopetegui loves Craig Dawson and Max Kilman. He also has options in Nathan Collins and Toti Gomes, and coule potentially bring in another centre-back this summer.

Even though there is now no major tournament coming up, Coady may not accept a squad player role.

He could seek a permanent departure, with Sheffield United having been linked.
