Wolves could now sell ‘Phil Foden-esque’ academy star for £2m as clubs circle

Wolves could reportedly sell midfielder Luke Cundle with a number of clubs showing an interest in him this month.

Cundle has been on loan at Championship side Plymouth Argyle this season and has caught the eye, playing 26 games, scoring four goals and making five assists.

It follows a spell he had at Swansea City last season.

Cundle, a Wolves academy graduate, made a few first-team appearances for Wolves before his long spells, with former manager Bruno Lage handing him his first Premier League start against Tottenham Hotspur, against whom he really impressed.

But it’s possible he may not add more to his six first-team appearances following reports yesterday evening…

The Express & Star reported yesterday that Wolves are now actually considering selling Cundle.

The publication claim that a fee of £2 million ‘would do the deal’. Clubs are apparently lining up to sign Cundle, and Stoke City and Bristol City are named as the current frontrunners.

It has been reported previously that Wolves are still having to be careful with their spending this month so as not to breach Profit and Sustainability rules.

The club did a good job in the summer of balancing the books after previously overspending, and the club are still somewhat restricted.

Seemingly, selling Cundle could be helpful for Wolves in their pursuit of first-team targets.

Cundle a saleable asset

It would be a bit of a shame to see Cundle go considering at one point he looked like one of the brightest young prospects at the club. In April 2022, James Collins raved over Cundle after he had played him as a false nine for the U21s in a game against Newcastle United, describing him as ‘Phil Foden-esque’.

Collins has also said that Cundle has ‘an outstanding football brain’.

But seemingly, Wanderers feel there is more to gain from selling him than keeping him.

£2 million doesn’t sound a huge amount, but it could ultimately help the club to get other transfer deals over the line.

If Cundle does move on, then hopefully he can become a key player and play regular football as he has been doing for the past season-and-a-half
