Wolves could lose a second player to Manchester United after Matheus Cunha transfer

Wolves fans have grown used to big names being sold by Fosun – and there is potential for Manchester United to come calling for one of the Old Gold’s best players.

In the summer of 2025, the trend continued with multiple players being sold by the club.

The headline exits were Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri. But experienced players like Nelson Semedo, Pablo Sarabia and Goncalo Guedes also departed.

Manchester United signed Cunha for £62.5 million, which was the value of Brazilian’s release clause.

They had long been linked with him, and it was no surprise that he left on day one of the transfer window.

But now, United could potentially come calling for another of Wolves’ best players.

It has been reported by the Daily Mail that Manchester United are looking to sign a world-class midfielder next summer.

The Red Devils want to slash their wage bill and are therefore not looking to extend Casemiro’s contract.

And it’s suggested Joao Gomes is a player they’re looking at. They are also looking at Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton.

Gomes is a player United have kept tabs on before. And they may well feel that the stars could finally align in 2026 to make an approach.

Of course, if Wolves go down, there is next to no chance of Wolves keeping hold of Gomes, so United will likely be hopeful of Wanderers dropping into the Championship.

Even if Wolves somehow stay up, one cannot help but feel as though Gomes is now probably playing his last season at Molineux.

We all know how Fosun operate, and there is also the notion that it will be Gomes’ time to go, having been at the club a few years now.

And he would likely go with the blessing of many fans. Because Gomes is an extremely popular figure at Wolves, and someone who always gives absolutely everything for the badge.

It would be awful to see him depart, but it’s a very real possibility. And if United can’t land him, then there are likely several other clubs who’ll try.

But Gomes could well be open to a move to United, given Cunha is there.

The pair are close, and Cunha can be influential – he helped convince Pedro Lima to make a move to Wolves in 2024, and may think he can do the same with Gomes.
