Wolves chiefs ‘frustrated’ but ‘accepting’ transfer loss after almost signing £17m defender

Wolves have been left frustrated by transfer hijack in a crucial position, but accept the reality of the situation, sources close to Molineux News understand.

Wolves‘ transfer window has been a frustrating one, with rumours fading almost as quickly as they appear. But more disappointing than a rumour being dismissed is a real deal that seemed to be making progress — only to fall through.

That is the situation that unfolded last week when a European giant derailed a much-needed reinforcement to Vitor Pereira’s side.

Wolves frustrated by Atletico Madrid hijacking of Marc Pubill but understand reality

According to Molineux News’ transfer expert Graeme Bailey, Wolves were very excited at the prospect of adding Marc Pubill to a defence severely lacking in depth.

They saw Pubill as the ideal Nelson Semedo replacement, and were in a good position in negotiations until Atletico Madrid overtook Wolves in the race for the Spaniard.

It was a deal that looked promising from the Molineux side, but it was later revealed that Pubill never wanted to leave Spain, making his decision to opt for Diego Simeone’s side the obvious choice.

Competing with a club like Atletico is difficult at the best of times, but in pursuit of a Spanish starlet, it’s almost impossible.

Wolves need to sign a full-back after Pubill says no

The season is right around the corner, and yet the void left by the departures of Rayan Ait-Nouri and Nelson Semedo is no closer to being filled.

Reports of interest from Wolves in Vladimir Coufal emerged earlier this week, with the 32-year-old at the end of his current contract. But the Coufal links have not pleased Wolves fans, with many pointing to his age and lack of form last season as reasons to look elsewhere.

Having received confirmation of Semedo leaving Wolves from Fabrizio Romano yesterday, any lingering hopes of last season’s skipper re-signing are dead in the water, and the pressure to replace both wide defenders is mounting.

Wednesday’s friendly against RC Lens highlighted the lack of creativity in this iteration of Vitor Pereira’s side, and while attacking options are needed as well, fans will be hoping to hear of an addition at the back before the season kicks off.
