Wolves were pushing for Hayden Hackney’s signature in the days and hours before the deadline.
Middlesbrough stood firm amid interest in their midfield star, and Wolves seemingly didn’t have a backup plan.
They have left the window behind without convincing cover for their midfield pairing of Andre and Joao Gomes, meaning they will surely have to dip back into the market in January.
Wolves’ chances of a Hayden Hackney move will depend on Middlesbrough’s proximity to promotion
Middlesbrough don’t have to sell Hackney.
They are in a good position with regard to PSR, and have sold well in the summer.
Sources close to Molineux News claim Middlesbrough learned their lesson last season when they sold Latte Lath while in play-off contention and suffered for it.
If they are in the top 10 in the Championship come January, a deal is extremely unlikely. Their start to the campaign offers little encouragement for Wolves.

Assuming Middlesbrough don’t perform well this season and a Hackney sale becomes a possibility, Wolves won’t find it easy making a deal for the 23-year-old.
At least half a dozen Premier League sides will be interested in this promising young talent, and a bidding war could ensue.
There were rumours of a £30 million bid tabled by Wolves, though Middlesbrough refuted that claim.

Regardless, that would be on the lower end of what Wolves can expect to pay for him in the winter, but it’s still probably worth it for a player with his ability and potential.
