Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui states his intentions for January

Julen Lopetegui has sat down to do an interview with Wolves, following his first few weeks in charge, and spoken about what he’d like to happen in January.

The Spaniard has been in place since mid-November, and is tasked with steering Wanderers away from danger.

The World Cup is almost over now, and it will soon be time for domestic football to resume.

Wolves have been out in Marbella since last week, and the players have been working hard in the warm weather to impress the new manager.

Lopetegui has been able to get a good look at the squad, and also oversaw a friendly match with Empoli, which finished 1-1.

Lopetegui has now sat down to reflect on his first few weeks in charge.

He’s pleased with the level that has been shown, and is looking forward to getting going, with his first game coming against Gillingham next Tuesday.

One topic that came up that will interest Wolves fans is the January transfer window.

Fans are hoping to see a few additions made to the squad, and Lopetegui stated that he is keen to get new faces in, but also retain his ‘main actors’.

He said: “Yes. We have to be clear, the main actors have to be here. After (that) I don’t know what is going to happen. We want to improve out squad. We need to improve our squad and we have to improve our competitiveness. And at the same time we have to increase the confidence.

“The players have to believe in themselves. to show they are better players than they have shown at the moment.

“We can help them, but the key things are that the players have the commitment and determination to change the situation.”

Julen Lopetegui’s comments about January will be music to Wolves fans’ ears

It is very clear now that Lopetegui wants to make some signings in the next transfer window. And that is exciting.

He’s already been quoted as saying discussions are taking place about potential deals for Matheus Cunha and Felipe.

Hopefully the Brazilian duo come in, and there are also maybe a couple of others to follow.

It was also interesting to hear him use the ‘main actors’ line again.

He is clearly talking about the likes of Ruben Neves and Raul Jimenez. Neves seems highly likely to see the season out with Wolves.

But Jimenez has been linked with his old team Club America, and also apparently has some interest from the MLS.

Lopetegui has already said he thinks the number nine can be an important player for him.

So one wonders if that comment was a public, indirect reiteration of that.
