Wolves and Liverpool interested in Portuguese defender who could leave for cut-price fee

Wolves may well need a huge January transfer window if the club are to avoid relegation this season – and there is word of interest in a Portuguese defender.

Wolves have had a torrid start to the 2025/26 season and appear set for a battle against the drop.

With just two points on the board after eight games, fans are deeply concerned at the moment.

Wolves looked to have been improving recently. But the defeat against Sunderland last weekend showed that Vitor Pereira’s side are way off it at the moment.

But we are still fairly early in the season, and Wolves still have plenty of time to turn things around.

However, Pereira is losing faith from some Wolves fans, and it will be interesting to see what the club’s position will be if he loses to Burnley this weekend.

It seems clear that Wolves need to strengthen in January after such a poor summer window – and a somewhat surprising claim has now emerged.

Wolves have been pretty poor all over the pitch so far this season.

Currently, the biggest issue Wolves have is scoring goals, with the strikers not clinical enough when chances come their way.

And the actual creating of chances for those players is also a big problem.

Wolves have also been abysmal at the back at times this season, although recently the backline has looked better for having Santiago Bueno and Ladislav Krejci as a pairing in a back four.

Despite that though, Wolves have been linked with a centre-back.

According to Milan Live, Wanderers are said to have shown interest in Union Berlin centre-back Diogo Leite.

AC Milan are also interested, as are Liverpool, and it is stated that Leite could leave his club for a ‘very low price’ in January, because his contract with Union is up at the end of the season.

Milan Live suggest a fee of €4-5 million could be enough to prise the former Portugal youth international away from his club.

January move for Leite feels unlikely

Wolves being linked with Leite is surprising in that, currently, there isn’t a massive need for another left-footed centre-back.

Wolves brought in Ladislav Krejci in the last window, and the Czech international has been a brilliant addition.

Then of course, there is club captain Toti Gomes.

Furthermore, Wolves have Santiago Bueno, Emmanuel Agbadou, Yerson Mosquera and Matt Doherty as centre-back options.

Perhaps the potential to get Leite in on a cut-price deal is appealing for Wolves. But one of those players would surely have to leave in January to free up space for him.

That said, Pereira previously admitted the plan was to keep all his defenders for the whole season.

Liam Keen recently reported that two midfielders will be on the agenda for Wolves, and another centre-back is not one of them.

Wolves will apparently seek a new midfielder, and also a winger or number 10 depending on which formation is being used the most at the time.
