Wolves actually ruined Brentford’s plans to replace Yoane Wissa

Newcastle United’s movements in the transfer window were frantic in the final week, eventually signing Yoane Wissa and leaving Brentford without a main goalscorer.

Yoane Wissa was brought in with Nick Woltemade to form a partnership up top for Eddie Howe’s side, after Alexander Isak forced a move to Liverpool.

Wolves were under threat from Newcastle, too, with Jorgen Strand Larsen heavily linked away, but it was Wissa who they went for.

Brentford’s plan was to replace Yoane Wissa with young German striker Maximilian Beier, but Wolves scuppered those plans with a sale of their own.

Fabio Silva’s pre-existing injury led Borussia Dortmund to keep Maximilian Beier

Wolves sold Fabio Silva to Dortmund for £23 million towards the end of the window, a fee that Dortmund executives were very happy with.

But Silva brought a knock with him from Wolves, and had just undergone surgery, leaving him sidelined for the opening weeks of the season.

According to Ruhr Nachrichten, Brentford had been eyeing Beier as a Wissa replacement, but the Silva injury meant the German side were reluctant to listen to offers.

They report: “After it became clear that the Portuguese would not be available for a few weeks, Borussia Dortmund immediately put a stop to a potential transfer for Maximilian Beier.

“This prevented negotiations with the English club Brentford, who were strongly interested, from even taking place.”

Not only did Wolves holding onto Strand Larsen negatively impact Brentford, but the sale of Silva has also left them frustrated.

Borussia Dortmund did not know about Fabio Silva’s surgery

BVB were made aware of Silva’s adductor problem, but not that he went for surgery.

As the article explains: “RN research confirms that Borussia Dortmund only learned of this operation when Silva had to submit his medical records for review at the medical check in Dortmund.

“There was no face-to-face meeting between the player and his agent prior to the medical check.”

This revelation spurred Dortmund to reconsider Beier’s future.

Wolves got some of the £35 million back for the striker, Dortmund got a player they see as a long-term replacement for Serhou Guirassy, and Brentford got left out in the cold.
