Why Wolves’ transfer interest in Tim Kleindienst is surely bad news for forgotten £15m player

The January transfer window is about to open, and one Wolves player could leave if the club make one particular move.

Wolves are expected to be busy next month.

It’s been a season of struggle so far, although the arrival of Vitor Pereira has been cause for new optimism.

It’s two wins out of two so far for the Portuguese since he replaced Gary O’Neil, and there is a belief that – with the right level of backing – he can guide the club to safety.

Wolves are expected to back Pereira with two new defensive recruits in January, but there may be other incomings.

And seemingly, Wolves have one eye on bolstering their attacking options.

According to German outlet Bild, Wolves are currently keeping an eye on Tim Kleindienst of Borussia Monchengladbach.

Kleindienst has been in red-hot form this season, scoring nine goals and making six assists in 17 appearances.

His goals have helped Gladbach up to eighth in the table, and they are currently only three points off the top four.

Bild state that while Gladbach are determined to hold on to the player beyond January, there is interest from Wolves and Everton. Both clubs have asked for information on him.

It will be very interesting to see if Wolves make a move for Kleindienst – and one would have thought any deal would be bad news for Sasa Kalajdzic.

Sasa Kalajdzic could leave on loan if Wolves sign Kleindienst

If Wolves sign Kleindienst in January, then it’s hard to see how Kalajdzic can stay.

The Austria international – who signed for Wolves for £15 million – has been working his way back from an ACL injury he sustained while on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt, and is on course to return next month.

In November, Gary O’Neil said Kalajdzic was a few weeks away from resuming full training at Wolves, so he won’t be too far off being ready for match action.

Kleindienst is a similar player to Kalajdzic. He stands at 6ft 4in tall – only a few inches shorter than Kalajdzic – and is claimed to have a style of play that is similar to Edin Dzeko (via bundesliga.com). He’s also said to have ‘tenacity, desire to work for his team and clinical finishing ability’.

Goals – 3
Assists – 1

Wolves already have Jorgen Strand Larsen, who is another tall player capable of being a target man and also scoring goals.

So if Wolves had both Strand Larsen and Kleindienst, that would surely make things very hard for Kalajdzic in terms of getting first-team minutes at Wolves.

Given he’s coming back from a third ACL injury of his career though, it’s difficult to look past Pereira sending him on loan somewhere – especially if Kleindienst arrives.
