Why Wolves’ pursuit of Richard Rios is not expected to progress, there’s one key issue

Wolves have livened up in the transfer window after weeks of inactivity on the incomings front.

Wolves are set to sign Jhon Arias after a big breakthrough on Monday.

Molineux News understands an agreement has been reached with Fluminense for the Colombia international’s transfer, and he is all set to become the club’s second addition.

Wolves are also reportedly ready to make a proposal for Georgios Vagiannidis of Panathinaikos.

And Wolves are also showing interest in Jaouen Hadjam, who is understood to be keen to come in and succeed Rayan Ait-Nouri.

Another player Wolves have been linked with is Richard Rios, who is expected to leave Palmeiras this summer.

It was claimed Wolves made an offer for Rios that was rejected.

But a counter-claim has now be made regarding the star.

It has been reported by Ben Jacobs on X that Wolves won’t be pressing ahead with their interest in Rios.

He actually states that Wolves have not made an offer for the player.

Simply put, the asking price that Palmeiras have set is proving prohibitive and at this stage, Wolves aren’t going after him.

Jacobs said: “Several Premier League clubs are tracking Palmeiras midfielder Richard Rios. Wolves appreciate Rios, but a move is not expected to materialise due to Palmeiras’ asking price.

“No bid made to date despite reports. Rios likely to cost €30m-€35m (£26m-£30m). Nottingham Forest another club tracking the Colombian.”

AS journalist Edu Burgos says that Palmeiras are after a fixed fee of €30 million (£26 million).

Wolves stance on Rios understandable

Some will find this frustrating, because Rios is a real talent.

But the notion that Wolves don’t want to pay this kind of fee is understandable, because Andre and Joao Gomes have their starting places locked down.

If Wolves were going to potentially £30 million on a midfielder, then he would simply have to play.

Appearances – 137
Goals – 11
Assists – 10

It would make no sense for a club like Wolves to shell out that much money on a midfielder, to then not make him a regular.

Perhaps Rios – who has 21 caps for Colombia – could play in midfield with Andre and Gomes.

But there is an argument to say that the Brazilians work best as a pairing.

A move for Rios would make sense at a lower price point, but one can understand Wolves being a bit reluctant to act on their interest.
