Why Jose Sa didn’t play for Wolves vs Santa Clara and may not feature in any more training games in Portugal

Wolves are now right in the thick of their pre-season training camp in Portugal.

Vitor Pereira is putting the players through their paces ahead of the 2025/26 season, and the noise from the trip so far is positive.

Wolves played their first game on Tuesday against Portuguese outfit Santa Clara.

Wanderers suffered a 2-1 defeat, but were said to have looked good in the game with a number of players really shining.

Wolves fans have hailed Sasa Kalajdzic for how well he took his goal against Santa Clara.

And Jorgen Strand Larsen and Fer Lopez showed ‘outstanding’ link up play at times, which certainly bodes well for the coming season.

Most of the players at the camp played against Santa Clara.

But one man who did not was Jose Sa, and the reason has now been shared.

Wolves fielded two completely different teams in each half against Santa Clara, with the exception being Alfie Pond who played both.

Dan Bentley played the first-half, while Tom King played the second.

There were no minutes for £7 million signing Jose Sa (Sky Sports) though, and it transpires that he actually suffered a somewhat unfortunate injury leading up to the match – with a ball striking him in the eye.

Journalist Liam Keen said on the E&S podcast: “We saw it, it did look painful, he slowly trudged away with the medical team. So a minor eye injury.

“He didn’t play against Santa Clara. We’re not expecting him to take any further place in games over in Portugal while we’re here.

“Nothing to be concerned about. He had a little bit of his head patched up a bit at the end of the training session.”

“He seemed… he will be fine. Long term, fine, won’t be an issue, but yeah, that’s the reason why he wasn’t involved.”

Sa seems set to stay at Wolves

The goalkeeper position at Wolves was spoken about a fair bit last season, especially in the weeks after Sam Johnstone signed.

It was a strange situation, with Wolves forking out £10 million to sign Johnstone from Palace.

But it recently came out that Chelsea had been attempting to sign Sa, but the move fell through.

The Portuguese stayed, and in recent times he has really nailed down the number one spot at Molineux, and clearly had absolute faith from Pereira in the second half of 2024/25.

Johnstone is a target for Burnley and Sunderland at the moment, and the feeling is he will go.

And if that does happen, it’s difficult to see Sa also being sold given his relative consistency under Pereira. Even if Galatasaray are showing interest in Sa.
