Why £9.7m Man United transfer deal may have significance for Wolves

Manchester United are about to sign off a transfer deal for around £9.7m – and this could be significant for Wolves.

Gary O’Neil is currently putting his players through their paces out in the blistering heat in Marbella, as he seeks to build on last season for 2024/25.

He has taken 29 players to the training camp, and it is a chance for many to show the manager what they can do, especially those on the fringes and people who went out on loan last season.

One man who falls into this category is Yerson Mosquera.

Mosquera finished up his loan spell with FC Cincinnati last term, before heading to Villarreal over in Spain for the second half of the season.

Villarreal have reportedly been very keen to re-sign Mosquera, who impressed across his 18 appearances.

But it looks like they are now going to raid Manchester United.

It has been widely reported that Villarreal will now sign Willy Kambwala from Manchester United.

BBC Sport have claimed the Spanish outfit will pay an initial £4.63 million, with add-ons taking the deal to just under £9.7 million.

It is expected that this deal will be completed in the next few days.

Now this is potentially interesting from a Wolves perspective because of all the reports there have been over the last couple of months about Villarreal being keen to land Mosquera from Wolves.

Just last week, it was suggested that Villarreal were working overtime to land the Colombia international.

Manager Marcelino had given the green light for a pursuit.

Mosquera also publicly opened the door to a permanent move to the club while he was still on loan there.

But very possibly, Villarreal may now not move for Mosquera, as centre-back Kambwala is a player of a similar profile.

Mosquera set for Wolves first-team?

It is impossible to look at this imminent transfer and not think about the potential significance for Wolves.

Kambwala is a little bit younger than Mosquera at 19, but this does feel like an alternative signing to Mosquera for them.

And one does wonder if this is because Villarreal received encouragement from Wolves.

It had previously been suggested that O’Neil liked what Mosquera was about and felt he could potentially be an option for next season.

The youngster was seen as a real gem when he first signed but then, of course, he sustained that serious hamstring injury, which completely altered his path at the club.

We will see if Villarreal do decide to push again for Mosquera. But it’d be no surprise now if there were no more links as a result of this Kambwala deal.
