Where Fer Lopez is set to rank in Wolves’ list of most expensive signings ever

Wolves have signed Fer Lopez from Celta Vigo, with only an official announcement from the club now needed.

Vitor Pereira finally has a player through the door at Molineux, and fans are hoping this will be the first of several.

Fer Lopez is a player Wolves believe could become a top star.

He is very much the kind of player the club go for these days, and supporters are hoping that he will be able to make an impact in his first season.

Lopez has been compared to Riyad Mahrez for the way he dribbles and controls the ball.

So given that past comparison, Wanderers could potentially have a gem on their hands.

But Wolves have been keen to play down the notion of him being a replacement for Matheus Cunha, who left Molineux to join Manchester United a few weeks ago.

According to reports including the E&S, Wolves have completed a move for Lopez for a fee of £19.5 million, but where does that put him in the list of the most expensive transfer deals in Wolves history?

For a lot of people, Fosun do not spend enough money on transfers.

The owners did some terrific work in the first few years of owning the club.

But plenty reckon the level of investment hasn’t been acceptable over the past few years, and some have bemoaned the approach of spending lower amounts of money on younger players.

But Fosun have committed a fair whack on Lopez, who actually enters the top 10 in terms of most expensive transfer deals ever at Wolves.

Most expensive signings Wolves have made
1. Matheus Cunha – £44m, from Atletico Madrid
2. Matheus Nunes – £42.2m, from Sporting CP
3. Fabio Silva – £35m, from FC Porto
4. Raul Jimenez – £30m, from Benfica
5. Nelson Semedo – £29m, from Barcelona
6. Goncalo Guedes – £27.5m, from Valencia
7. Andre – £21m, from Fluminense
8. Nathan Collins – £20.5m, from Burnley
9. Fer Lopez – £19.5m, from Celta Vigo
10. Jonny Castro Otto/Adama Traore – both £18m, from Atletico/Middlesbrough

Wolves will hope that the fee of £19.5 million for Lopez will prove to be a bargain. Dave Edwards has backed Lopez to shine for Wolves, with the former midfielder liking how ‘imposing’ he looks and the way he shoots.

He will need time to settle, and will also need patience from fans, as he has only actually made 20 appearances for Celta’s first-team before joining Wolves.

Wolves will hope Fer Lopez is not another Fabio Silva

Some have understandably compared this deal for Lopez to the one that was sanctioned for Fabio Silva back in 2020.

Like Lopez now, Silva arrived at Molineux having not had much experience of senior football.

But Lopez is a couple of years older than Silva, and is around £15 million cheaper.

It is still a high price that Wolves have paid.

But clearly, recruitment officials feel he is worth it and hopefully, he will fare much better than Silva did and not need loan moves.
