What Wolves plan to do with ‘outstanding’ £4.5m player in January

Wolves are reportedly planning to prioritise a loan move to a club in Europe for defender Yerson Mosquera, if he’s not deemed ready for the first-team.

Mosquera has just finished a loan spell at MLS club FC Cincinnati, which was ‘outstanding’ according to pathways manager Steve Davis recently.

Mosquera made 35 appearances in total for the club, after joining back in February from Wolves.

Wolves decided to get Mosquera out on loan after finally signing Craig Dawson, which was something they had actually wanted to do in the summer of 2022.

It has been a chance for Mosquera to get regular minutes under his belt after his first season at Wolves was wrecked by injury, and also an opportunity for him to improve his English, something that Davis has said he’s managed to do.

Now, there is word on the next step for the Colombia international…

ESPN journalist Julian Capera claimed on X yesterday that Wolves are going to make a decision on Mosquera soon.

He has finished up at Cincinnati and the club have to decide on what course of action to take next.

It has been suggested that Wolves would like to get Mosquera into a Championship club, as they see the youngster as a potential first-teamer and it would make sense for him to get some good experience of the English game.

Capera has suggested that Wolves will prioritise sending Mosquera to a club in Europe next. they will also consider sending him back to Cincinnati if nothing suitable comes up.

But the likelihood is that no decision will be taken until Gary O’Neil has had a chance to get a proper look at him.

The intention is for £4.5 million signing Mosquera to eventually become a first-team option, and so O’Neil will obviously want to see where he’s at following his spell in the States.

Championship stint hopefully next for Mosquera

Mosquera’s spell at Cincinnati could not really have gone much better. Pat Noonan, Cincinnati’s head coach, said recently that Mosquera was in the conversation for being named defender of the year in the MLS, which says it all.

His spell in the US was all about him finding his feet again after his serious hamstring injury.

He’s been able to do that and also improve his English which is fantastic to hear.

Hopefully, Mosquera will now be primed to join a club in the Championship, because you would think that would prepare him for Premier League football the best.

If there is interest and, obviously, Gary O’Neil doesn’t quite deem him ready for the Wolves first-team, then surely a Championship move should be the priority.
