What Wolves have now told Rob Edwards about Joao Gomes ahead of January transfer window

Joao Gomes may not be with Wolves for much longer – and today there is word about the midfielder with regards to the January transfer window.

Joao Gomes has cut a frustrated figure this season amid Wolves’ struggles, which is understandable.

He’s not been at his best, and you can clearly see how much that has been weighing on him, as a player that deeply cares about this football club.

Gomes may not have reached the level we know he can, but his efforts have still been appreciated by fans, and there is no doubt he remains a key player who should start every game.

Sadly, it is starting to feel like Gomes’ days at Molineux could be numbered, given the club’s precarious league position.

Some have even expressed concern that he could leave in January.

But one new claim today may put people’s minds at rest for the time being.

If Wolves are to have any hope of staving off relegation this season, then Gomes needs to be on the pitch as much as possible for Wolves and back at his best level.

He is highly influential, and potentially even Wolves’ best player.

Thankfully, an update today from TEAMtalk suggests Wolves acknowledge those things. The publication claims that Wolves have actually assured new manager Edwards that – despite being on the radars of other clubs – Gomes will not be sold in January.

The club are set to stand firm over the Brazilian, just as they did at the end of the summer window with Jorgen Strand Larsen when Newcastle United came calling.

Manchester United are one club interested in Gomes, having monitored him for quite a while now. The Red Devils are expected to lose Casemiro in the summer and are searching for a long-term successor.

But any hopes United have of landing Gomes in January appear to be slim, as Molineux officials look to give Edwards the best possible chance of succeeding.

Keeping Joao Gomes is essential for Wolves

It is absolutely paramount that Wolves keep hold of Joao Gomes for the whole season.

Arguably, it is even more important to ensure he stays than it was that Strand Larsen didn’t go in the summer.

Because Gomes, when on song, is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League with the energy he brings and that superb ability to win the ball back for his side.

Joao Gomes has never hidden his love for the Wolves fans

“I love being here and I love playing for you.” – Joao Gomes, after winning Supporters’ Player of the Season for Wolves in 2024/25

He is someone who does the dirty work so well, and in a way he reflects the hardworking and passionate nature of the fans, which perhaps goes some way to explaining why the Molineux faithful love him so much.

It could be that clubs still try to test Wolves’ resolve over Gomes in January, despite this stance.

Hopefully, Jeff Shi will not be tempted to cash in. One would like to hope that even if the chairman did look to do that, Gomes himself would block any move.
