What Wolves are now unlikely to do in the transfer window because of Matheus Cunha

Wolves fans are hoping to see more new faces arrive at the club – but there is one thing Wanderers are now not expected to do this summer.

Gary O’Neil could be proud of what he achieved last term, after taking over from Julen Lopetegui just days before the season started.

Wolves finished 14th, with injuries to key players and some atrocious VAR decisions big reasons why the club couldn’t finish much higher.

One of the most impressive achievements for O’Neil last season was that he got Wolves to be more clinical in front of goal. Wolves scored 50 goals in the Premier League, which was significantly more than the 31 they managed in 2022/23.

Goalscoring had long been a problem for Wolves.

But O’Neil really got a tune out of the attackers especially.

One man who played a very important role was Matheus Cunha, and Wolves do have very high hopes for him in 2024/25.

Wolves not expected to sign another striker after Jorgen Strand Larsen due to ‘belief’ in Matheus Cunha

Last week, Wolves completed a move for Jorgen Strand Larsen.

He has arrived on loan, and Wolves will turn the move permanent once he makes a certain number of appearances. It is a signing that has excited the fanbase.

Wolves found their goalscoring touch last season and the hope is that Strand Larsen will help Wolves to become even more potent, having scored 13 in La Liga last term.

But fans hoping to see another striker arrive after the Norwegian may be disappointed.

It has been reported by Give Me Sport that Wolves do not intend to make a move for another striker now that Strand Larsen has come in – and that is in part down to the confidence they have in Cunha.

Wolves are said to believe the Brazilian has the capacity to improve on the 12 Premier League goals he scored in 2023/24.

So bringing in another striker is not a priority for O’Neil.

Wolves should be OK

Cunha was one of Wolves’ most important players last season and he stands to play a big part again in 2024/25.

The £60,000-a-week ace scored 12 Premier League goals last time out, and there is no reason why he cannot better that tally in 2024/25. He fully knows the English game now, and the club have signed Strand Larsen who could be a great complement to him.

Wolves then have Hwang Hee-chan who can play through the middle if needs be, and Leon Chiwome may also be an option, with O’Neil a fan of the youngster. He signed a new contract recently, and may well be sticking around with the first-team, with Nathan Fraser expected to go out on loan.

The picture could change, but for the moment it seems unlikely Wolves will be adding another centre-forward to their ranks.
