What Wolves are now expected to do with Enso Gonzalez after return from U20 World Cup

Enso Gonzalez is a player Wolves fans have barely seen over the last few years.

The Paraguayan youngster joined Wolves from Libertad for around £10 million back in 2023, and there were high hopes for the South American winger.

But it quickly became apparent that Gonzalez just wasn’t ready for the Premier League.

He spent a lot of time with the U21s, and was only given his first-team debut by Gary O’Neil in Wolves’ penultimate game of 2023/24 against Crystal Palace. He took to the field right at the very end of the game.

Gonzalez would then suffer a major setback in the summer, as he picked up an ACL injury whilst playing for Paraguay at the Olympic Games in Paris.

After missing the whole of last season, Gonzalez is now back in the picture – and journalist Liam Keen has shared what Wolves are thinking with him.

The injury Gonzalez suffered was extremely unfortunate and untimely.

He had not had the season he’d hoped for in 2023/24, and would have been determined to step up.

But his injury robbed him of the chance to do that and now, Gonzalez is trying to make up for lost time.

Gonzalez did not head out on loan ahead of the 2025/26 season despite brief suggestions he would, with Wolves ultimately keen for him to play at the U20 World Cup in Chile.

It was a mixed bag there for Gonzalez, who scored against Panama, but then got sent off against South Korea.

Gonzalez is back at Wolves now, and Liam Keen has shared the plan for the youngster.

He said on the latest E&S podcast: “He’s been away with Paraguay U20s, by all accounts he’s done fairly well at that tournament while Paraguay were in it, which is good to see.

“The (Wolves) team are back in training today after the weekend, they had the Monday off. Considering they’ll be training now while we’re recording, it’s obviously difficult to say whether he actually did train or not. But he has been training with the first-team (this season). My expectation is that he trained with them.

“He is back in the country, back in the building.

“The position he’s in really is that he’s trying to sort of prove himself again, back after injury, get his fitness back up. He’s done well with his country, that will give him a bit of confidence and do him the world of good.

“I don’t think he’s very close to getting an opportunity in the first-team at all, in my opinion. I can’t see that for a little while. What will be important for him will be a really good loan.

“He was potentially going to go in the summer, but he got called up for the tournament with Paraguay and didn’t go in the end.

“What we’re expecting now is that Enso will probably get a loan in January, and he needs to go and play. He needs to go and play, get him opportunities and minutes.

Enso Gonzalez has major work to do to play for Wolves

Gonzalez – who has been unable to play under Vitor Pereira so far – will now presumably play some games for the U21s before the January transfer window opens.

A loan move would be sensible, because there has been no indication that Gonzalez is anywhere close to playing for the Wolves first-team.

And one would imagine he would have to really dazzle if he is to potentially become a first-teamer at Wolves next season.

We will see where he ends up. But perhaps just to get him going and in the interest of building momentum as quickly as possible, a move to Spain could be ideal.

Gonzalez is now making up for lost time, and needs to settle quickly at his next club – as a Spanish speaker, a move to a La Liga or La Liga 2 side would make a lot of sense.
