What Manchester United sources are now saying about João Gomes and Wolves

Wolves fans have been bracing for Joao Gomes to leave in January after Manchester United reportedly held an interest in signing the midfielder.

With a relegation battle certainly on the cards and the drop to the Championship looming, Wolves fans fear the worst when it comes to Joao Gomes.

The common price mooted for the 24-year-old has been in and around £44 million, which would put him among the Old Gold’s biggest sales.

Joao Gomes’ mooted fee could see him become one of the biggest sales ever at Wolves

However, most recently, it has been said that Wolves would be seeking £50 million or more for their star Brazilian.

David Ornstein has previously shared Wolves are playing down the chance of Gomes leaving, but he has now updated what the other side of the rumours has been telling him.

David Ornstein shares that Manchester United sources are downplaying Joao Gomes talks

‘Speculation linking Joao Gomes to Manchester United has been rumbling on for the last week.

With Wolves looking to be heading for relegation, the reports of their top stars being linked with a move away were always the likely outcome.

Liam Keen reported there has been no contact between the two parties for Gomes, and now David Ornstein has shared what Manchester United sources have told him.

The Athletic journalist has said, “Manchester United sources say there is no truth in reports that they are pursuing the 24-year-old midfielder.”

Rob Edwards addresses Joao Gomes transfer rumours

“We’ve spoken about stuff but my focus has been on getting the team organised. We have got some good players and there will always be interest, but I’m not aware of anything. Joao has been excellent this week.”

That is excellent news for Rob Edwards. The Wolves head coach has been told no top stars will be sold in January, and based on the Ornstein update, it seems that promise is being kept.

And this update could also help Joao Gomes on the pitch in the coming weeks.

Joao Gomes can play for Wolves without speculation running through his head

The last thing Wolves need right now is for one of their top stars to be distracted.

Joao Gomes playing while a potential transfer saga goes on around him would not be ideal for Wolves, especially when they so desperately need to start picking up wins.

The Brazilian midfielder has endured a poor campaign, but so have many in the Wolves squad.

Fans know what qualities he can bring, and if the Old Gold can play themselves into some form, then Gomes will be incredibly important.

Football fans know more than anyone how quickly transfer sagas can change, but this update from Ornstein will provide a little bit of peace.

But we are sure that will not stop the links from being made over the next few weeks, and the fact the news comes from such a reliable source should hopefully quieten any further noise.
