What David Ornstein has heard about Wolves January transfer plans to back Rob Edwards

Rob Edwards is going to be the next Wolves manager, and David Ornstein has shared what the plan is to back him in the upcoming window.

After a week of speculation, it’s becoming clear that Edwards will be announced as Wolves’ new manager, and the club are already looking to January to help their new hire get the most out of a so-far dismal season.

The 42-year-old comes into a difficult situation. Alan Shearer thinks Wolves are planning for relegation with Edwards, but that’s a more pessimistic view than most fans would be willing to accept.

The gap to safety is now eight points, and last season proved such a margin is recoverable, but it will require vast improvements. The January window is Wolves’ best chance.

David Ornstein says Rob Edwards will be backed in January

Ornstein is one of the biggest — and most trusted — names when it comes to transfer news.

He spoke to NBC after news of the agreement broke, laying out the transfer plan as he sees it.

He says: “I would expect Wolves to be active to support Rob Edwards with some new signings. Now, they can’t really bring foreign players into the club, unless some leave. Unless they are under the age of 21.

“I think there will be more of a focus on homegrown players, especially with the idea that they may be in the Championship next season. I think they’re going to focus very heavily on the attacking areas, on goals, and on creativity, because they are lacking severely.”

Young, homegrown attackers are on the shopping list for Fosun, it seems. Ornstein is relaying the talking point about possible relegation planning, but this is the practice Wolves have to follow in any case, considering the current makeup of the squad.

The attributes Wolves need in attack

Jorgen Strand Larsen and Tolu Arokodare, while not in the form of their lives, provide enough cover and quality in the number 9 spot.

Any additions will be brought in to play off either of the big strikers, so pace, creativity and confidence are the traits needed. Wolves have relied too much on playmaking and goal threat from defenders. It’s not a recipe for consistency.

There is also a need for a different profile of midfielder. Long-time target Hayden Hackney could follow Edwards to Wolves in January, but if not, that is a position that needs to be addressed.

Andre and Joao Gomes should be the nailed-on starters, but the options behind them need to offer more.

The upcoming window is crucial for Wolves and Edwards, if they are to mount a comeback from the bottom. It’s encouraging to hear that Wolves are prepared to spend, but how they spend is just as important.
