What Arsenal are now plotting this summer could have interesting implications for Wolves and Matheus Cunha

One of the most significant things Wolves did in recent weeks was tie Matheus Cunha down to a new contract.

It was something that Wolves had wanted to do for weeks, with Cunha having shone this season.

But Cunha reportedly stalled over signing a new Wolves contract, with his agent making a bit of noise.

Speculation started to mount that Cunha was looking to potentially leave Molineux in the January transfer window.

But in the end, he put pen to paper, in what was a major development.

Cunha has a new release clause of £62.5m and one would imagine a number of clubs will be very tempted by that this summer.

But one club that may now not be in the running is Arsenal.

Arsenal targeting Benjamin Sesko could be good news for Wolves over Matheus Cunha

In recent times, Arsenal have been one of the most strongly linked teams to Cunha.

The Gunners have admired the Brazilian for a long time, and there were suggestions that they might have tried to sign him in January.

In the end, they didn’t and Wolves were able to keep hold of their talisman.

It remains to be seen what happens with Cunha this summer, but at the moment it looks like a move to Arsenal is off the cards.

According to Give Me Sport, Arsenal are said to have an ‘extreme’ interest in RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko.

With the Gunners seemingly ready to commit big funds to signing an alternative forward in Sesko, it surely casts doubt over them signing Cunha this summer.

Wolves will still find it hard to keep Matheus Cunha this summer

So Arsenal may no longer be keen to sign Cunha, but Wolves will still struggle to keep Cunha this summer.

Realistically, the Brazil international is good enough to be playing for a club in the Champions League.

He may have signed a new deal at Molineux, but it’s hard to see him remaining at the club beyond the summer of 2025.

Appearances – 80
Goals – 27
Assists – 13

Arsenal seem to be prioritising other targets, but there has still been interest in Cunha from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Chelsea.

In an ideal world, if Wolves are going to lose Cunha this summer, then the star will head to a team overseas, so there would be no chance of him coming back to haunt Wanderers.
