Vitor Pereira dealt huge transfer blow as move for key Wolves target now ‘not on the cards’

Wolves supporters have seen how quickly things can progress in the transfer window, with players moving here, there and everywhere.

It was only last week that Vitor Pereira registered an interest in Reims centre-back Emmanuel Agbadou, and now he’s Wolves first January signing of 2025.

Agbadou penned a 4.5-year contract at Wolves and joined for a fee worth a reported £15m, arriving as an exciting addition.

The deal for the towering Ivorian isn’t going to be the last, though, as the Old Gold have their eyes on another defender.

It was reported days ago that Wolves were interested in Chelsea’s Renato Veiga, with Liam Keen even confirming the rumour.

However, Pereira has been dealt a blow in a transfer for the 21-year-old defender after the Blues issued a response to their approach.

Wolves transfer for Renato Veiga now ‘not on the cards’

It was only earlier on Friday morning that Keen suggested Wolves wanted to sign Veiga, perhaps becoming their primary defensive target after landing Agbadou.

But, the transfer window moves rapidly and now, reputable journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed a transfer for the Portuguese international is ‘not on the cards’ after Chelsea turned down the Wanderers approach.

It remains to be seen whether Wolves enquired about taking the defender on loan or permanently but Veiga would have been excellent competition for Toti Gomes, and seeing their hopes of signing him diminish is admittedly a blow.

The 2003-born star is extremely versatile, with Enzo Maresca praising Veiga previously, as he can play as a centre-back, wing-back or central midfielder across various systems.

As such, Pereira perhaps saw him as an option would could fill in at centre-back or wing back but it appears a move is now off and he has to move onto other targets.

Wolves other defensive targets outlined

The Premier League strugglers have a long shortlist of players they’ve targeted in the early stages of this transfer window.

Kevin Danso was reportedly Pereira’s top target as the Austrian looks set to depart Lens this month however, Danso turned down Wolves.

Now, the Wanderers are said to still want the 26-year-old and don’t want to give up hope on signing Danso, who would be a great capture.

The Old Gold have also looked at players in the EFL, with Wolves showing an interest in Japhet Tanganga, the talented centre-back currently playing for Millwall.

Meanwhile, Wolves have also considered a move for Auxerre’s Clement Akpa as another option from Ligue 1, with the 23-year-old potentially another bargain signing.

It demonstrates that while it’s disappointing to lose out on Veiga as it stands, there are plenty of other players they could sign.
