Two players being ‘watched’ by Wolves as one position made top priority for January transfer window

Wolves have made one position their priority to strengthen and there are no prizes for guessing which one it is.

Gary O’Neil’s men have endured a torrid start to the Premier League campaign, sitting rock bottom of the table with just one point from seven games.

Wolves have also been leaking goals for fun, conceding six in the defeat to Chelsea and five at Brentford in the match before the international break.

The Old Gold haven’t been helped by the season-ending injury to Yerson Mosquera but their problems started when they failed to replace Max Kilman in the summer.

Kilman’s departure to West Ham left just Craig Dawson, Toti Gomes, Mosquera and Santi Bueno, with O’Neil realising that not filling his void was detrimental.

Wolves now looking at Christopher Wooh, Dan Ballard and Anel Ahmedhodzic

Following the injury to Mosquera, Wolves were considering moves for James Tomkins and ex-Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett.

O’Neil instantly shut down claims they wanted to sign Dummett and Tomkins while explaining the difficulty of capturing a free-agent centre-back capable of playing in the Premier League.

That hasn’t stopped the Wolves boss from planning for the January window, though, with transfer expert Graeme Bailey exclusively telling Molineux News that O’Neil will add a centre-back to his squad, naming Christopher Wooh, Anel Ahmedhodzic and Dan Ballard as three players they’re looking at.

“Am told they are looking around – they watched Wooh as we know – but they are looking closely at abroad and England and are being offered many different players – safe to say we see one CB come in January,” Bailey said.

“They are looking at the Championship and am told two players they have watched this season are Sunderland’s Dan Ballard and Sheffield United’s Anel Ahmedhodzic.”

Wolves have previously shown an interest in Ahmedhodzic but were unwilling to pay the £20 million asking price while Ballard and Wooh are two names that have recently popped onto the radar.

A quality centre-back won’t come cheap for Wolves

O’Neil previously said that Wolves spending money in the future will come from player sales as opposed to Fosun’s pocket.

It means that the Old Gold would need to sell a player for a sizeable amount in January to spend big money on a defender.

Realistically, signing a quality centre-back in January isn’t going to come cheap, as clubs are unwilling to part ways with important players halfway through the season unless the offer made is irrefutable.

In the case of Sheffield United and Sunderland, they could still be in the mix for promotion at the start of next year, therefore moves for Ahmedhodzic and Ballard look unlikely.

However, it’s worth keeping an eye on Wooh, the Cameroon international who plays for Ligue 1 side Rennes, as he could be one option that O’Neil explores once the winter window is open.
