Two key points about Matheus Cunha’s new contract at Wolves, including his latest release clause

Wolves fans were left delighted last night as talisman Matheus Cunha finally signed a new contract at the club.

Matheus Cunha helped Wolves to a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Molineux in the Premier League, before then signing on the dotted line.

It was something that had been mooted for a while. But there were suggestions that the player had been stalling.

But following last night’s huge victory, the club announced the new contract.

Cunha said it felt right for him to stay at Wolves and fight, and fans are delighted and also relieved that he will be sticking around.

Cunha has a lot of teams interested in him. But he won’t now be moving in this window.

And following the announcement of his new contract, a couple of important details have emerged about Cunha’s new deal.

Cunha signing a new Wolves contract was always likely going to mean that a release clause would be put in place.

Simply put, Cunha is a top player who could well be playing for a club in the Champions League. Wolves acknowledge that, and have therefore made it easier for him to get a move this summer.

According to the Daily Mail, Cunha does indeed have a new release clause with his new contract. And it’s actually not as low as expected.

It’s worth £62.5 million and becomes active this June. And there have been no suggestions of that figure becoming lower if Wolves get relegated.

Another key point about this new contract for Cunha, is that, according to The Guardian, the Brazilian has become Wolves’ new highest-earning player.

Previously Pablo Sarabia was the top earner for Wolves and thought to be on around £90,000 per week at Molineux.

Cunha could leave Wolves in the summer

Cunha will certainly leave Wolves this summer if the club drop into the Championship as there’s just no way he would play in the second tier of English football.

Although that release clause is decent, Cunha is probably still likely to leave Wolves this summer even if the club stay up.

It’s a clause that a number of clubs would be able to afford, and Cunha has clearly demonstrated he is worth that much money.

Cunha already said in his interview about his new contract that everyone wants something more in their career.

That does suggest he’s already thinking about life after Wolves, so fans shouldn’t be too surprised if he does go this summer.
