Wolves are reportedly likely to sign Craig Dawson today in a £5 million deal.
According to The Telegraph (live blog, 01/09/2022, 9.21am), Wanderers are leading the chase for the 32-year-old ahead of the 11pm deadline.
Dawson is also wanted by Aston Villa.
Steven Gerrard has lost summer signing Diego Carlos to a long-term injury and wants to replace the Brazilian.
They have been showing interest in Dawson, but it’s Wolves who are set to sign the centre-half.
West Ham will reluctantly agree to let him depart if they can secure a replacement today.
At the moment, they are being strongly linked with a move for Southampton’s Jan Bednarek.
Dawson wants out of West Ham, and it is thought he wants to move back up north. The player has also slipped down the pecking order at the London Stadium, and would like to increase his chances of playing regular football again.
Him moving to Molineux would likely see him become third-choice after Nathan Collins and Maximilian Kilman.
Willy Boly is leaving the club today to join Nottingham Forest, so Dawson would essentially become his replacement.
An encouraging update on the Craig Dawson situation
So it looks as though Dawson is set to become new signing number five for Wolves.
Hopefully, West Ham are soon able to get Bednarek in, which will pave the way for this Dawson deal to come to fruition.
£5 million is a decent fee and one that will be offset by the Boly sale. It is thought the Ivory Coast international will join Forest for about £4.65 million in total (via Daily Mail).
He would bring experience and versatility to Bruno Lage’s squad.
