Tottenham Hotspur now want to sign ‘super talent’ from Wolves this month

Wolves could be set to lose one of their star players in this transfer window as Tottenham Hotspur have shown their interest in midfielder Joao Gomes.

With the January transfer window open, rumours continue to swirl regarding potential incomings and outgoings.

Given their FFP restrictions, it is believed that Wolves could need to sell some of their players before they can buy.

Pedro Neto is the one who has stolen the limelight in that regard. Arsenal have held a long-term admiration for the winger, however, the club have said it’ll take a massive offer from them to consider letting him go.

Goalkeeper Jose Sa is also believed to be the target of clubs in the Saudi Pro League while Nottingham Forest – under the management of Nuno Espirito Santo – are keen on luring the ‘incredible’ keeper to the City Ground.

The most recent name to be linked with a move away from Molineux is midfielder Joao Gomes, who has been incredible for Wolves this term.

Tottenham are interested in Joao Gomes

Wolves captured Joao Gomes from Flamengo for £15 million in January last year and the 22-year-old has improved exponentially since then.

The Brazilian has become an integral part of Gary O’Neil’s midfield, forming an indispensable partnership with Mario Lemina in the engine room.

As a result, the Wolves boss recently praised his performance in the victory over Chelsea as ‘incredible’ and it’s reaching those levels that have seen him attract interest from one of the Premier League’s big boys.

According to a report from Fla Web in Brazil, Gomes is on Tottenham’s radar as Ange Postecoglu attempts to bolster his midfield having already signed defender Radu Dragusin and forward Timo Werner.

It is believed that Spurs have signalled they will make a bid to sign him ‘very soon’, though it has been made clear that Wolves wouldn’t sell him for anything less than £30 million.

With his current contract running till 2028, the Midlands side can hold out for substantial fee, likely to be far more than the one touted.

Gomes is worth far more than £30 million to Wolves

Gomes has elevated his game to new heights since O’Neil arrived in the summer with his manager hailing him as a ‘super talent’.

When looking at his statistics this term, it is clear to see why he’s thought of so highly by his current peers and by clubs across Europe.

The 22-year-old has impressed with his incredible energy and dynamism in midfield while being crucial to retaining possession for his side.

One of the midfielder’s key strengths is tackling; he covers so much ground every game and is excellent at winning the ball back.

This is underscored by the fact only four players in the Premier League have made more tackles than his total of 3.2 per game, as per Sofascore.

When he’s taken out of the side his presence is missed so much and his value to Wolves is at least pushing double the £30 million figure that was touted.

Indeed, O’Neil has to do everything in his power to keep his talented Brazilian at Molineux, at least until the summer.
