‘They thought’: Matt Hobbs shares what he heard from people at Tottenham about Matt Doherty

Matt Hobbs has shared something rather interesting about Matt Doherty from his time at Tottenham Hotspur, in the wake of him re-signing for Wolves.

Wanderers have finally made an addition this summer, bringing in the 31-year-old Republic of Ireland international for a second spell.

Doherty spent 10 years at Wolves before leaving the club in 2020 to join Tottenham Hotspur.

It didn’t really work out for him there, and in January of this year he went to play for Atletico Madrid.

He only made a couple of appearances for the Spanish giants, before being released at the end of the season.

He’s now looking to get his career back on track with Wolves, but Hobbs has revealed the perception of Doherty behind the scenes at Spurs.

Matt Hobbs says some people at Tottenham felt he should have played more as he made them better

Doherty made 71 appearances for Spurs during his time at the club. He scored three goals and made eight assists.

But the star was never really a regular starter for the north London outfit.

Quite often, Emerson Royal was preferred on the right side.

Seemingly, Doherty was struggling to impress. But Molineux sporting director Hobbs has shared the perception of Doherty behind the scenes.

He said (via Wolves official): “I spoke to people at Spurs who thought he should have got more opportunities, because they thought they were a better team when he was in it.

“It’s probably given him some hunger, he’s probably thinking the last couple of years he hasn’t been able to play as much as he wanted and, while he doesn’t have something to prove, he’ll want to show himself again.

“The type of player he is, he wants to get in the box, wants to be scoring and creating goals, and he’s a good option to have as part of the squad.”

Matt Doherty will be determined to get his career going again

Doherty’s spell at Tottenham did not go as he hoped.

He did get a decent amount of opportunities, but probably didn’t get the regular starts needed to build momentum.

But then, you have to show that you are worth playing from the start.

These remarks from Hobbs are interesting. It would have been very intriguing to know who exactly at Spurs felt this about Doherty.

But you can imagine that there probably was some clamour for Doherty to play more at Spurs. Because Emerson was not exactly pulling up trees when he was in the side.

We shall see how much Doherty features this time around for Wolves.

The system has changed now, and Lopetegui is known to be a big fan of Nelson Semedo.

Doherty will have to work very hard to become a regular starter.
