The surprise step Man United are now ‘expected’ to take to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves

Matheus Cunha’s move out of Wolves could be confirmed very soon as Manchester United have taken a giant step in their pursuit of the Brazilian.

Man United have emerged as front-runners for Cunha in recent months, with the 25-year-old revealing Old Trafford to be his ideal destination, despite them sitting below Wolves in the Premier League.

United have reportedly offered a five-year contract to Cunha as a persuasive tool to land him ahead of other interested clubs.

Cunha wants to leave Wolves before the end of the 2024/25 campaign, perhaps because he wants to know where his future lies before pre-season.

That is looking increasingly likely as Ruben Amorim edges closer to landing his marquee signing, with the Red Devils expected to take a surprise step.

Man United ‘expected’ to offer Wolves £67m to sign Matheus Cunha

When Cunha signed a new contract in January to keep him at the club until the end of the season, it is well-known that the Molineux-based side inserted a £62.5 million release clause in his deal.

United, alongside many other clubs, were willing to trigger that fee to land the Brazil international, although they have reportedly taken an extra step to jump ahead of the queue.

According to GOAL Brazil journalist Valentin Furlan, Man United are expected to pay €80m (£67m) to sign Vitor Pereira’s talisman, which includes €6m (£5m) in add-ons.

Valentin claims they are just extras in the deal, with Wolves reportedly stifling Arsenal’s late approach for the forward.

It seems the final agreement on personal terms will be resolved in the coming days before Cunha is announced as a Man United player.

Cunha must fix attitude problem to become a top player

The move to Manchester United is a weird one. Although they’re going to record their lowest-ever points total in the Premier League, Amorim’s men can secure Champions League football by beating Tottenham in the Europa League final.

Should the worst-case scenario happen, though, and Cunha will be joining a team with no European football next season after finishing potentially as low as 17th in the table.

From a personal point of view, that isn’t a great move, although he could be fuelled by the motivation to fire United back to their best, something most players have failed to do.

On paper, the Wolves man is the perfect fit for Amorim’s system, slotting into one of his number 10 positions behind the striker.

However, to become a success at Old Trafford, he must move past his attitude problems. Cunha has been banned twice this term, once for nicking the glasses from an Ipswich Town security guard and the other for violent conduct against Bournemouth.

That, and his lack of work rate, are the two things holding him back from cementing himself as a top player.
